Fractured bones, slow healing

Morning everyone,

Just wondering if anyone else with systemic sclerosis, has found that they are slow to heal ?

I broke my tibia and fibula 5 and a half weeks ago in Morocco, been in a cast since then , none weight bearing at first then partial weight bearing with a boot over the cast ,for the last 2 weeks. I went back to the fracture clinic yesterday and had an x ray but the consultant said there doesn't seem to be much if any improvement since my last x ray , now my cast as been removed and I am in a fit form boot, upto knee for at least another 3 weeks then I go back for another xray and check.

I am quite concerned about this and frustrated , I know these things take time but to show no improvement is disheartening.

So has anyone else found they are slow to heal ?and if so please share your experience.

Have a lovely day all, enjoy the sunshine

Hi Buttsy. I also fractured my tibia and fibula and dislocated all the bones in my ankle in November of last year. It certainly has been a slow recovery and it took ages for the tibia and fibula to heal.I was discharged home in my cast and wheelchair. Once the bones were showing signs of healing, I was given a Moon boot. I was lucky to have physios work with me at home to get me mobile. I have sent back all the Physio /OT equipment except 2 elbow crutches which I am using to get about. I'm not perfect with my mobility but it is. so much better. I hope your recovery has the same success. Alice

Thanks for your response,

I am so glad you are healing and recovering now. I am getting around in my fit form boot now and 2 crutches , hopefully there will be improvement when I go back in 3 weeks.

I should have said that I have osteoporosis which can affect healing. xx

Hi Buttsy. So sorry you are having this problem. Have you had or considered getting a bone density scan? If not then your rheumatologist can refer you just to get osteoporosis or osteopenia excluded as reason for slow healing xx

Hi Old Ted,

Thanks for your reply,I haven’t had a bone density scan, but I will mention it at my next rheumatologist appointment.
