Hydroxychloroquine - strange side effect

Hydroxychloroquine was added to my drug regime 3 weeks ago at a visit to the Rhematologist. I also had Tadalafil dosage increased and Famotidine added for my gut. On day 3 I woke up with a very sore mouth. The inside of my mouth was red and it was so tender I was having difficulty talking. I visited the pharmacist who advised me to stop the Hydroxychloroquine immediately and contact the Rheumatologist.

2 weeks passed with my mouth not getting better. I tried reducing the Tadalafil and even saw a dentist to explore if it might be something else. Both the dentist and pharmacist agree that it is a reaction to the Hydroxychloroquine. I finally spoke to the Rheumatologist who says she has never come across this side effect.

Has anyone else had this kind of reaction?

Haven't personally had any problems but the information sheet that comes with the tablets does talk about sore mouth and lips for some people, worth a look. Sounds horrible. Had similar experience many years ago but that was because of 🍅 tomatoes which I have to avoid now.

I've been taking it also, started a few months ago, but haven't had any noticeable side effects. Perhaps it was a reaction to the 3 meds together? I hope your problem gets solved quickly. Good luck.

I'm sorry to hear that you are having this reaction. I'm siding with the rheumatologist because after taking plaquenil for over 35 years I have yet to hear or see this type of reaction. SQB mentions tomatoes bothered them. You might want to see if you started eating anything different at about that time. Good luck and peace!
