Electric wheelchair

I am a patient of systemic sclerosis. My disease has made me disabled; it is mainly affecting my leg and feet; I am struggling with walking, so I am thinking to buy an electric wheelchair.

Anyone can advise when one is best and any the charity who can support me to buy it as these are out of the budget.

thanks

Sidra

Hi missgreat_19,

I was referred by Occupational Therapy at my local hospital to my local council because I was and still am having real difficulty in walking and climbing the stairs at home. Whilst I didn’t feel I needed a wheelchair I was offered a stair chairlift and other adaptations around the

home. The chairlift was means tested and I didn’t qualify

for the grant ( which I understood and accepted). Perhaps you could ask your GP to refer you to your Council Authority and as long as you fulfil the criteria and can prove you are financially unable to buy a chair yourself you should hopefully get some help.

I do appreciate that all Local Authority Councils have different rules but it is certainly worth pursuing. If they can’t help they should know of Charities who may be able to help you. Ask your GP to refer you and good luck.

Hope this info helps.

Forgot to say you will be assessed in your home as to your needs following the referral.
