beta blockers

I would like (and have been advised) to take beta blockers daily for irregular heartbeat but on the other hand have been told not to because it will make my Raynaud's worse! What shall I do? Put up with irregular heartbeat, which is frightening, which makes it worse, or put up with increasingly painful hands (especially in this weather!).

I sympathise with this dilemma and think professional advice is urgently needed! I asked for myself and was told the occasional beta blocker might be OK but not regular.

Yes, it's tricky, isn't it? At least you're getting the same advice - occasional but not regular – but now that I ideally need to take them daily it's a dilemma. I will ask again. It's one of those weighing-up-the-risks situations.

I agree with Crenellated, this is a question best asked of a medical provider. Any medicine we take has the potential for side effects, but only you and your doctor can decide if the benefits are worth the risks.

I take a beta block only once a day. I take it at night.

Hi there, I suspect like all medications where there are a range of drugs on the market then there may be some betablockers that have more impact on your circulation than others, so it might be worth trialling the options your Dr suggests. It also may make a difference when you take the drug. So, you might be able to take some medications at night so you are tucked up warm and cosy in your bed when it has the most significant impact on you.

I think anything that is having a significant effect on your heart rhythm has to be prioritised, especially as it sounds like it is causing you a fair amount of distress, but hopefully there are some options that don't compromise your circulation too much.

All my best

Thank you LucyJean, that's sensible – I always forget that there are different sorts of the same type of medication so I will ask if there is one worth trying. No good taking it at night as I'm asleep and my heart doesn't play silly tricks while I'm asleep (or if it does I'm not aware, which is what counts!)
