Specialist has increased my omeprazole from 40mg to 80mg and also given me Erythromycin 250mg per day for my reflux/aperistactic osoephagus. Has any one else heard of taking so much omeprazole?

Yes, 40 mg. twice daily is very common in systemic scleroderma and benefits typically far outweigh risks with this disease. I’ve been on this dosage for some time now when manometry and 24-hr. pH monitoring showed a lower dose failed to control the acid component of my reflux. Despite some alarmist articles out there about PPIs, experts consider them to be quite safe and usually essential to protect the esophagus and lungs in scleroderma.

Hi galaxie, I take 80 Omeprazole for reflux. I tried to reduce this to 60 but ended up having a large bleed. Good luck.

Hi galaxie

I too take nexium 40mg sometimes twice a day in the morning and before supper but my doctor put me on carafate it really helps me with my acid reflux. You take 30min after your nexium and two hours after you eat and mostly they start you with three or four times a day but it really help me I mostly only take my nexium in the morning and that’s all.

Yes, I take that dose. The benefits, for me outweigh the risks. Because I neglected the reflux for so long, I ended up with an ulcerated oesophagus. Once that healed, the scarring has narrowed it significantly and I'm left with a lot of problems eating enough.
