I have shoulder issues due to some bad falls I damaged the rotator cuff on both shoulders at different times. I was amazed how exercises had changed within a couple of years. I had to be careful doing them cos of the Scleroderma.
I did go to Physio and tried to get the movement going.
One good exercise was to stand against a wall with a towel between your arm and the wall (you stand sideways on) and lift your arm straight up gently against the wall a few times. I used some small wrist weights 2 kg on each wrists (hands are so curled difficult to use hand weights) and lifted the arms straight up a few times on each side. You can do this sitting in a chair. Only do as many as you can and don’t overdo it.
According to the Physio she said massage just makes you feel good at the time, where’s the correct exercise improves the movement of the body.
Hi MEW53 - thanks for your reply - i will certainly follow the exercise you suggested. I also went to Physio today who gave me a few more and a referral to hydro.
Hi. I was diagnosed 2 years ago with SSc, RA, Srojens. I developed shoulder pain and restricted movement a year ago....worst was my right shoulder which got so bad I couldn't move my arm in any direction without excruciating pain and it almost totally seized up. My doc sent me for xrays which showed mild RA but nothing severe enough to explain the pain I was in. Then I was sent for physio.....which needless to say was impossible due to the pain. Anyway eventually I saw a second doc and she prescribed injection treatment....steroid plus local anaesthetic. The pain relief has been amazing....it did take a few weeks to work but I'm now able to move my shoulder probably 80% of normal movement has returned. The doc who carried out the procedure told me the problem had been caused by the scleraderma tightening the tendons rather than the RA. Anyway sorry to have gone on but all I can say is wow so pleased I had the injection treatment!
Thanks for your response. I do have an appointment with the Sceloderma specialist this coming Friday - i will request an xray of shoulders to make sure there is no underlying damage. I can move them - just restricted - Oh dont like injections even though i have monthly blood test!
Sounds like Poppydingdong improved well with her injection, I tried an injection but made no difference, the gentle stretching exercises got me going again. Good you have a specialist appt soon.
Hello, I have SSc, Sjogrens and RA. I also experienced weaking of the arms in particular. I was sent to a neurologist who diagnosed arthritis in the neck, I had no pain. The arthritis had caused the discs in the neck, between C5/C6 and C6/C7 to push into my spinal chord and permanently damage it. The disc were removed by a neurosurgeon and I was told I would not regain my strength, which I haven't. Worth an Xray of the neck as well? Enjoy your massage.
