Narcolepsy and catalepsy

Hi

I have always been a sleepy person. Since being a teen I struggled with afternoon lectures, I fall asleep in the car, and watching tv . My knees collapse and head lolls when I find something hilarious or if I am distraught. This extreme emotion is rare. This was normal for me, thought nothing of it. My husband realised it wasn’t normal and did some research (while I slept!).

I realise now I am likely to have Narcolepsy and mild catalepsy. I also have restless legs.

I am frightened to get a proper diagnosis because I am worried I will loose my driving license. Has anyone else in the uk got narcolepsy and had discussions with the dvla.

I have had this my entire life, it’s my normal. I know I need to sleep before driving long distance and I know I need a break after about an hour. I mostly just potter around locally (half hour journeys) and my husband drives any long distance. I also take a nap for half an hour in the afternoon to get me through the day.

My workplace is becoming more demanding due to staff shortage and I already covering the tasks of 3 staff. I want to declare my condition but worried about the official diagnosis will have on my driving license and insurance.

any advice would helpful.

Thanks for reading

Hi Ginger 337,You are not alone. You have described my life exactly. However, my diagnosis is mild obstructive sleep apnoea and upper airways resistance syndrome.

In my opinion, you need a diagnosis, then you will know what you are dealing with and what treatments might be necessary.

I have been treated with CPAP since 2016 which has made an incredible difference to me.

I understand your fears especially as the DVLA are working on a backlog of cases. Making changes to your license might be a lengthy process

However, your health comes first, please get a diagnosis, you could be feeling better sooner rather than later.

Take care
