Seeing things as I wake up??

This happens occasionally, maybe a few times a month? It's hard to describe well but it's like, I wake up in a panic (sitting up in bed gasping, seriously terrified) and see something that's not there. For example, the majoritof the time, it's a HUGE spider like the size of a medium dog, or other strange creature, crawling down the wall or on the ceiling. One time it was the shadow of a man standing in the doorway. I know it's not real and nothing is there but it's EXTREMELY lifelike & feels completely real, especially bc these aren't nightmares..I'm awake when I see them and panic. It is such a scary experience each time and this started maybe a year ago? Does anyone know what this could be and has anyone else experienced this?

Do you have anything connected to the occult? It's been known before. I see my dreams/nightmares as I'm going to sleep and what I see makes today's horror films seem like Tom and Jerry and I have nothing connected to the occult. For me, I think it's tricky chemical transmission.

No, nothing connected there. It is terrifying.

I have seen human-shaped shadows in doorways for many years, and of late, I actually saw one that looked like Billy Bunter, not tubby, but facial features, hair and clothes, just like his. It is disturbing but I just tell myself it's a chemical thing and move on. Medium dog-sized spiders sounds terrifying and although I've dreamt of giant spiders, they're not part of the awake visions. I also hear my mother calling me and of late, my son calling me, when they're not there.

Maybe you can get something from the medical world?

I have sometimes woken as if I can't move and am stuck and struggle to breathe. Once or twice I felt something was pushing down on me. I had my experience explained as that I hadn't woken properly or as a state that happens when coming out of dreaming. Mine seems to be a recognised symptom I think its all to do with no sleeping very well. x Anita

I've read some into sleep paralysis, that's what that sounds like! So scary

Are you on medication?

Steroid can sometimes cause strange hallucination.

Yes I just started Buspar & Lexapro for anxiety last week but this has been going on for a lot longer.

Try looking into hypnopompic hallucinations. These can be caused by medications you may be taking, substance use/abuse, mood disorders, even narcolepsy (since these are only on occasion I’d say you don’t exhibit classic signs of this sleep disorder).

I did some research on it and it sounds exactly like what I experience but I'm not sure bc like you said, it's not an all the time thing.

in reply to bsk96

I was stating that narcolepsy being the cause doesn’t sound likely, you’d have symptoms all the time not on occasion with narcolepsy.

Oh I misunderstood! Hypnopompic hallucinations sound just like what I go through.

Sounds crazy i know, but to me it sounds like you have a spirit/entity in your house. Pray and read the Bible aloud while you look for someone to help you expel or cleanse this from your home.

I see people when I wake in the night, not always but I have runs of seeing them quite plainly. I saw a snake 2 nights ago and it was going to bite me, all night every noise was frightening me, I even looked in the draws under my bed. I,m going crazy!
