I think I have suffered from insomnia for the whole of my life, I am 80. I lie awake - eyes wide open (will NOT stay closed) brain racing until the early hours, every little noise makes me jump and I wake up when my husband rises whoever quiet he tries to be, feeling tired and worn out.

I have tried reading, not reading, tablets (followed by hangover), relaxation, alcohol and no alcohol, TV and no TV, music, meditation, getting up and doing something useful - you name it and I've tried it.

My doctor keeps saying it will pass(?) and some people can manage fine on 4 - 5 hours a night, but I have to say I always feel half alive and it makes you suicidal!

I am one of those who feel lucky when I sleep 5 hours. And insomnia has been an issue for me for the last 2 years. It started getting better when I let go of the importance of sleep! It is overrated . I think that it is not a good idea to do anything if you cannot sleep. Scientists discovered that, if you lie in bed peacefully, parts of the brain go to sleep even if you are still fully conscious. And your body rests. Part of your feeling bad in the morning could be psychological. You did not get (enough ?) sleep so you expect to feel tired. But the very fact that you reached 80 speaks for itself. Insomnia is not something to fear ! Unpleasant, yes, but that is all !

Wish I could give you an answer! My insomnia started 5 years ago when I was struggling with anxiety and stayed since then.

I'm 70 and it sometimes feels like a battle and like you, have tried everything suggested. Continually reading what effects lack of sleep can do does NOT help!!

I guess the only answer is to accept this is how things are and stop fighting. Very light sleeper and like you, the slightest sound wakens me. Have taken to wearing a sleep mask and using earplugs. Also treated myself to a weighted blanket for Christmas and think it helps a bit.

If you are lucky and find that magical answer, please share {before you patent it and make millions!!}

I have had chronic insomnia for about 30 years, been through sleep clinic testing, no apnea and have found many other reasons for it and some things that help. Many of our medications can be an issue like, Lipitor, take it in the morning. I had taken Cipro for many years for bladder infections, even had the Rx on hand to take after sex. That drug alone can cause "intractable insomnia" as written in a book by a Dr. who, himself, had many bad issues from taking that drug. Read up on all your current meds to be certain you are taking nothing that could possibly have insomnia as a side effect. I used ambien for many years in the past, then temazepam for several, and now use .5 mg xanax at bedtime, along with 300 mg. gabapentin, and sometimes unisom (doxalamine version) and sleep like a baby for about 8 hours a night. Sleep is absolutely necessary for good health. Many other health issues can arise from lack of sleep. When I was not getting any more than 4 - 5 hours per night, I was miserable and lived in a zombie state. If you do not have a compassionate doctor who will give you something to help, find another one who will. I do find that I need to stop watching TV or electronic screens at least an hour prior to bedtime. Something about that excites the brain to where it takes more time to fall asleep. Best wishes.
