I can’t get up in the morning! Please help :)

I have had trouble since I can remember with getting up at a set time in the morning. I end up late for jobs, opportunities, appointments, etc, or just not getting up and deciding to quit the job or skip the opportunity because I don’t want to get up. If I don’t have anything going on in the morning I’ll sleep till noon or longer. I also have trouble on the other end(falling asleep at a good time), but I can’t force that. If I’m not tired, I don’t fall asleep, period. So the solution seems to be to somehow get up at a consistent time every morning and I think the night time issues would sort themselves out to a point. But I just can’t seem to do it! I don’t know what my issue is. I’ve tried many, many strategies. My latest one is to lock up my phone in a lock box and put the key to it outside so in order to turn the alarm off I have to get up and go outside. I will either sleep through the alarm, fitfully, but I’ll just lay there, or I’ll go turn off the alarm and still go right back to sleep. I don’t know what to do!!! It has truly negatively affected my life and I’m at my wit’s end. Please help :)

Hi! I saw this last night as I was about to go to bed.

The first thing that springs to mind is a sleep disorder called Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD). Also known as Periodic Limb Movement during Sleep (PLMS), this is characterized by unconcious leg movements while asleep. Since the movements are unconcious, an in-lab sleep study (polysomnography) is the only way to diagnose this. I have this. I was very surprised when I got the diagnosis, but it helped explain why I woke up every morning feeling as though I hadn’t slept at all.

«The Sleep Solution» by W. Chris Winters might also be a good book for you to read. He mainly talks about sleep disorders, but also harps on ideal sleep environment (right bedding, cooler room temperature, keeping it absolute dark, etc.)

Do you see a sleep specialist? If not, it might be a good idea (especially since you’re at your wit’s end)

Good luck!
