Cough at night / Sjogren ?

I have been coughing for over a year at night, yet officially diagnosed with Sjogren 3 months ago. ( all tests always negative until September 2021)

I litteraly cough every 2 hours or so. I am so exhausted and a lot of time cannot go back to sleep. I tried humidifier. Raising bed at night. No luck. It’s unbearable. Saw an ENT before my diagnosis, suggested my be Gerd. I doubt the cough is rather dry and sudden. Gave me acide reflux med. didn’t work.

Is cough at night a symptom of Sjogren. I read chronic cough is common but seems throughout the day and night for most people.

Anyone suffer from this. Any help would be appreciated. I can’t figure out if it’s Sjogren or something else also. So depressing from this lack of sleep.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi, your coughing at night may not be related to Sjogrens. I would go back to GP & have a further conversation with them. It could be mild asthma which is irritated when your lying down or sleep apnea where either soft tissue is blocking your airwaves causing you to suddenly cough & wake you up or any number of other reasons. Gerd can wake you suddenly when reflux suddenly shoots up your throat & makes you feel like your choking which can be frightening as I have suffered from this over the years. Although not lying on your right side might helps this. But maybe if the antacids dont work you could try a proton pump inhibitor medication which helps with gerd. They works differently than antacids but its a conversation you need to have with your GP or ENT consultant. Hopefully, you find an answer but keep going back if things dont improve. Good luck.

I've had sinus problems since puberty so may be unrelated to my auto-immune state. My cough was due to post-nasal drip which is chronic in my family. I do think that humidity is critical in colder months when the heater is running. I have a diffuser that I run every night in winter. I also add some essential oils that are designed to keep the sinuses open. If you use them be sure they are high quality. You must clean your appliances and/or replace the filters regularly. Perhaps an air filter might help. I also use a salt inhaler twice a day. And when I get especially stuffy or drippy I take a decongestant or antihistamine. Good luck! -Sue
