Hi diddy

Just checking that out and found some info re making your own tooth paste on the colgate web site! There was was a variety of suggestions you could use for cleaning teeth. Might give it a go as have tried a range of toothpaste. I usually have to use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth along with them.i do like the biotene products ie toothpaste mouth gel andmouth wash

There are a lot of things in toothpaste that is not good for your mouth. Triclosan, an industrial hospital cleaner and so much else. Even glycerine, a very common ingredient in toothpaste, is commonly used in moisturiser, is known to dry out the skin after a temporary moist feeling.

I have tried a couple of homemade toothpastes and found like you have that my teeth were less sensitive. Bi-carb has long been known to be a great teeth cleaner and brushing is more important for cleaning the teeth than toothpaste, no judgement here. Glad you found something that works for you. There are a lot of recipes online if you want to amp up your bi-carb with some germ killing power and coconut is very popular which seems good for moisture in the mouth.

Thanks for sharing.

The colgate web site did mention coconut oil as well- is that the same oil that can use for cooking?

You want to use cold-pressed unrefined coconut oil. It is the stronger flavoured the the refined coconut oil but is healthier than the refined so it is also the one people are recommended to cook with. It is in the health food section of supermarkets.

Hi weathvane

I used bi carb at one point when my mouth was driving me crazy. I didn't have a diagnosis at that point and didn't know what to do. Bi carb gave me good relief. It felt like all the plaque on my teeth was removed from the bi carb brushing and this felt better for awhile. I wanted to live on bi carb at that time!

I don't use bi carb now but I keep it in the back of my mind as a technique for giving relief. My dentist didn't recomment the practise. He said bi carb is too abrasive. He recommended the biotene toothpaste, the gel, the spray and the moose rubbed on the teeth each night (I'm not regular at this - but I think it's useful - in the morning my teeth feel smooth and I dont feel any roughness on the teeth).

I have some other strategies currently. I clean my teeth after I eat or drink anything other than water - I brush about 7 - 10 times a day. I've increased my water intake (still not too good at this). I swirl a teaspoon of good coconut oil around my mouth once or twice a day (but it's still food in the mouth). I have changed my diet - soft, liquid, low sugar food - hard foods rip my mouth to pieces. I floss a few times a day to get rid of any food in the mouth.

I'm only using the biotene toothpaste and the moose not the other products.

Some days I wake up and my tongue is not all cracked and sore. I'm trying to figure out what I've done in the day to get this good morning result.

Generally the mouth and teeth and lips are a grind and always on my mind.

Good luck with finding some relief.

Hi diddy1 I to have used bi carb soda and do in patches. I send away for the OraMed tooth drops. It has natural ingredients...sweet almond kernel oil spearmint leaf oil and peppermint oil. It has a strong taste but I just wet my brush and put one drop on and that is enough to clean my teeth and leave it moisturized longer through the day and the night. Run your brush under hot water to make it softer before you use anything and that helps when dealing with a sore mouth. Just go on the OraMed website. They are good to deal with and one small bottle lasts me nearly a year of use. A wise older Dr told me not long ago that SS people need to keep themselves moisturized inside and out and to use coconut oil for both. Just work out what amounts suits your body. Good luck
