Hi, my son has scikle cell anemia ss type he is 2 years old and has crisis like every 4 weeks some time it's really bad and some time he can bear it , his consultant has mentioned hydroxy and has advised me to put him on that as he gets crisis frequently. Originally I didn't want to put him on hydroxy as I don't feel comfortable putting him on high drugs but on the other hand I have been told that people who take these drugs have less crisis what I'd want to know by taking those drugs has it made a difference in your crisis and what are the side effect?

I am considering it as I can't see my son suffering from those horrible pain.

I have been using hydroxy urea since 1998 (since age of 9 years) and it is the most effective solution to sickle cell problem, apart from bone marrow transplantation. I have 3-4 minor crises, lasting 2-3 days, per year. However despite starting this drug, usual care that is required for sickle cell patients must be taken, i.e. blood tests, hydration, protection from infection/

There are side effects of the drug but as far as I am concerned, I did not have mentionable side effects.

The amount of drug intake depends on Body Mass Index. The doctor will tell you daily dosage of the drug.If the drug is successful, sickling problem is almost solved.
