Neupogen

I am having trouble with a low white blood cell count- missing 3 treatments. My doctor is reluctant to give me shots of neupogen because of the side effects- extreme muscle ache.

I would like to ask those who have taken these shots what side effects, and how severe have they been? Thank you.

Neupogen is similar to Neulasta. I was on Neulasta to prevent low white blood cell counts while i was on Carbo and Doxil. To prevent bone pain I took Claritin the day of the shot, and I think once a day for about 5 days following the shot. I had no pain at all, and I'm wondering if this also will help with Neupogen.

Thank you. I really appreciate your response. I'm new to this and I'm taking the same combo of drugs.

I have both shots of neupogen and neulasta since November with no side effects, of course I hAve had side effects from chemo; neuropathy and loss of hair, neither caused by Neupogen or Neulasta

hi eberhips,

I am new here, I just read your response to someone, I simply wanted to ask what chemo drugs made you loose your hair...

Thanks, Hilda

Taxol caused me to lose my hair.

my cancer cocktail was taxol and carboplatnum

I took Claritin starting the day before my Nulasta shot and for 4-5 days after. It does help. It is strange but works

it seems strange your doctor is more worried about bone pain rather than ensuring you receive timely chemotherapy. time to figure out priorities!

Hi. I've had the name problem with white blood count and neutrophils. I am now on filogrestin injections for 5 days, 48 hrs after chemo. Not sure if these are the same thing. I was warned about side effects of aching bones and after 2 cycles of using them, I have not had any side effects.

My side effects were a throbbing in my chest that I was told I might experience, and I did. But once I knew what it was I was good with it.

I had a horrible reaction. Felt like my chest was going to explode. I really thought I was having a heart attack. I was in the hospital at MD Anderson at the time. I also had severe muscle spasms all across my lower back. I could not sit, stand, or lie comfortably for hours. The spasms were so hard the nurse could feel them without even touching me. She had to order a strong muscle relaxer from the pharmacy in the middle of the night. And also had the sternum pain as well. Not a fun experience at all.

I too take Claritin the day of and for a few days after. I do experience the aches, but it doesn't last long and knowing to expect it, makes it okay with me. I prefer the treatment.
