cataract surgery

I had my ophthalmology appointment yesterday and was told I need to have cataract surgery, which explains why driving at night is so bad. Has anyone had cataract surgery? I’m on Ibrance and Letrozole. A little nervous about having the surgery I know it is a very simple surgery but just concerned about what to do about the medication.

Thank you

Not only have I had cataract surgery but also worked in ophthalmology for 20 years. You will be so pleased with the results of surgery. It's a real game changer. I would check with my oncologist but suspect you'll be given a go ahead with no problems.

Thank you, I also worked in ophthalmology for 16 years. I know I will be happy with the outcome just A little nervous about what to do regarding my treatment. One thing nice about having worked in that department is I picked the best surgeon!!

I had cataract surgery last year. My oncologist advised me to have a break from chemo treatment 3 weeks before and 3 weeks after the 'surgery '. All went well.

All the best for your cataract op.

I have had quite a few surgeries on my eye (not for cataracts) since diagnosis and I’m also on Letrozole and Palbociclib. Each time I have stopped palbo for a certain period and I also did when I had my ovaries removed. At my last scan, I was still no evidence of active disease and the team assured me the stopping and starting would not have any impact which appears to be right! I hope your procedure goes very well and I would definitely not worry about not taking the meds for a short period.

I had Cataract surgery several years ago and it went smoothly. I did have to stop the Verzenio/Tamoxifen 3 weeks, before and after the surgery. I had a breast removed in 2021 and had to do the same before and after surgery. I was ok. Good luck with your surgery!

Cheers, June S.

I had cataract surgery about 2 1/2 years ago, actually two surgeries as eye operated on had to be covered for awhile after and we didn't want both eyes covered at the same time. I don't remember if I had to halt any meds..... but getting the first eye done made me totally relaxed about the second one. Such an easy procedure. I paid extra for each lens put in my eyes to have them correct nearsightedness and astigmatisms. Not having to wear glasses anymore after weari9ng them for over 50 years was delightful! but took time to get used to. I kept looking for my glasses every morning for over a year! lol Talk about an embedded habit!

My dr had me stop Ibrance 2 weeks before cataract surgery an I stated again 3 days later . The surgery was no big deal and I can see so much better. I Got a cataract while on letrozole. I truly think it caused it. It’s listed as a possible side effect

Cataract surgery. I had one eye done April 2022 and second to be done October 2022. Choose Multifocal fine Vision premium lens at a cost. 20/20 vision with corrected eye. Series of eye drops over a short period of time. I am on Ibrance and letrozole and there were absolutely no complications. Day after the surgery I was in complete awe as to how vivid colours were and a view without the haze of the cataracts.

My wife was on the same medications when she had cataract surgery a couple of years ago. We timed it so she had the surgery on the week before her week off Ibrance followed by a second week off Ibrance. So although she remained off Ibrance for a total of two weeks she only missed one week of medication. She remained on letrozole throughout. There were no issues with the surgery or with being off Ibrance. All the best

Speak with your onc about meds. My boyfriend had cataract surgery and did very well. Very quick and easy! I wish you well.

Hi! I had cataract surgery last year, one eye in Nov and the other in Dec. I was amazed how fast, easy and painless it was! I am on Ibrance and Fulvestrant and my meds were not changed/stopped at all. The most annoying thing is dealing with all the drops you have to put in for weeks afterwards. I wouldn’t hesitate to have the surgery. It has been so amazing! I only have to wear reading glasses for the tenny tiniest print, otherwise no glasses!

Cataract surgery is a breeze; takes no more than 10 minutes. No pain, it's great. I didn't have my cataract surgery while on treatment with letrozole and Ibrance, but did have my pacemaker replaced. Onc told me to go off the Ibrance for a week before and a week after to aid healing. I had no problems. The cataract surgery is barely surgery, it's so fast and almost none invasive - just like a 1-2mm incision to remove and replace lens, but you need to go over everything with your onc before the surgery. You can see actual cataract surgeries on Youtube; I watched a bunch before mine, and they were very reassuring. You'll be so happy to see again!

Your oncologist will recommend you go off Ibance for a few weeks before and after procedure to build up your blood count to avoid infection. I even do that before cortisone shots ( making my appointment the 7 days I’m off Ibrance )

I had cataract surgery as everything started to become cloudy. The cataracts were over the center of my eye. The surgery was not as scary as I thought. It was done pretty quickly one eye at a time. The surgery was great now I have 2020 vision. I was also on Letrozole and Ibrance. I later found our that Letrozole causes cataracts and Osteoporosis. Now I have osteopenia.

Certainly you may ask any thing. I was diagnosed in 2013 but I know because of circumstances, I had it at least 2010.
