Hi all, I’m in the US and wanted to share the below info on Covid prevention/treatment options for immunocompromised folks. Scientists are just starting to understand the serious long-term effects that even mild Covid can have on the brain, heart, and lungs so I figure it’s worth doing what you can to avoid that, we all have enough to contend with already! I have gotten #1 and #2 below.
1) Preventive: 4th Vaccine Shot
For immunocompromised folks the 3rd shot is considered part of their “primary vaccine series” and a 4th shot (booster) is now authorized for immunocompromised people of any age, plus (as of yesterday) anyone over 50. You can get it at any CVS/Walgreens.
2) Preventive: Evusheld
The Evusheld shot is available to immunocompromised people at no cost. It contains Covid antibodies and works on a preventive basis - injecting the antibodies into you directly since immuno-compromised folks likely have not made enough of their own in response to the vaccine. It is in scarce supply but your PCP or oncologist can prescribe it.
3) Treatment: Monoclonal Antibodies or Paxlovid
If you test positive for Covid, immunocompromised people can likely access one of these treatments via their doctors to substantially reduce the risk of severe effects. Monoclonal antibodies are given by infusion, and Paxlovid is a course of pills which must be started within 5 days of symptom onset.
Hope this is helpful and that everyone stays safe!
