Tooth, gum update

Just had a call from a maxillofacial surgeon - he's seen X-rays & photos & thinks there is just infection & no current ONJ jaw damage! He thinks extraction at this stage could cause more harm than good & will call me in a month to see how things are going - phew.

Perhaps I could miss this month's denosumab just in case extraction is needed in a month. I’m currently not in any pain at all.

Incidentally, my recent bloods were fine, despite the infection & taking antibiotics.

I’m due to see my oncologist tomorrow & collect next month of trial meds 👍

Take care & stay safe

Jo xx

Great news Jo. I would miss the jab this time. Better to be prepared. The Denosumab stays in our systems for 6 months. I missed 7months altogether and also had a break March/April/May due to COVID. I wasn’t allowed to visit the hospital for my jab and they gave me 3 months supply of Letrozole and Palbociclib. You may have to miss one before and one after.

Good to hear your bloods are good to. Even though you are on antibiotics. You must be doing something right.

Keep us updated as I’m interested to know what they decide.

Best wishes

Cheryl

When my onco first put me on the xcegva(?) injection due to mets at my lower spine, she specifically stressed to me NO DENTAL WORK while I am on it. She said if you have any dental issues, go now. I said well I don't but I am still getting the injection (got it yesterday) so now I fear a fear of having a dental issue emergency bc she said I cannot get any type of dental work, even a cleaning, without being off it.

Good luck.

I've been on xgeva for years and get a once monthly injection. I've had dental work done, but just no bone or extractions. Some doctors get freaked out even if you go for a filling, but if you read about it, it's just any dental work that affects the bone, not just a surface issue. I hope this helps you.

Oh, what a relief! Thanks for sharing! :)

I've had to go without bone meds for six months at a time more than once due to needing invasive dental work. Cancer has not progressed during those times. I'm currently on one of those Xgeva vacations as a lower bridge got damaged when I fell on my face about three or four months ago. Just got the new bridge in yesterday. Never any signs of ONJ and I've been on these meds for over 16 years.....I'm a long timer with mbc. Just wanted to give you some reassurance that some of us can do really with bone mets in spite of long breaks off the bone meds.

I needed to get on this site tonight for a reason-I just found out why. Your post💕. Only 4 1/2 yrs in but the stubbornest person I know lol (not really) I just refuse to die from Cancer.

Xeloda stopped working last month so I am currently going through some intense radiation to fix the new lesions on my ribs and my pelvic bone (10 angles). I only have Mets to bones🎉 which I can deal with.

I have absolutely dreaded the iv chemo phase of cancer but now here I am starting Monday. Terrified but will stay strong for my daughter, husband & myself.

Thank you for your post!! I needed to hear it from a “lifer” today 😘

One reason I post here is to let people know that some of us live a long time! Alot of the "average survival" numbers floating around fail to mention that those numbers include metsters who were very near death when first diagnosed, those who have very very aggressive cancer, and those who for what ever reason just cannot receive good care. Early in my 16 + years with cancer, I went to an annual conference put on by the Metastatic Breast Cancer Coalition (I hope I am not getting my cancer organizations confused!) There was a 30 year survivor there! Longest I have heard of! And there were several 20 year survivors! That left me so full of hope! Plus we generally do not die from bone mets. I don't know why some oncs quote survival times without explaining how unhelpful those numbers are to us as individuals! But there are medical people who just do not understand statistics!
