A good walk

I had my last chemo session cancelled because my liver enzymes were too high and almost had my session yesterday cancelled as they hadn’t reduced enough. I asked the oncologist what I could do to bring them down and he just shrugged and said there was nothing I could do.

When I got home last night I had a look on the internet and found that they are impacted by exercise and hydration. I know I’ve been struggling to drink enough and with home working I’ve not been doing so much exercise so today I made the decision to improve this.

The picture was taken whilst I was walking the dog in the fields surrounding the village where I live. I don’t know if the extra steps helped reduce my liver enzymes but it did my head the power of good.

Well done Julie, sounds good sense. I must drink more water as I am having nasty side effects in week off and dehydration may be the problem, who knows?! All the best, Fay

It’s so easy not to drink enough and it has such a big impact 🙂

Oh! What a lovely “exercise yard!” How could such a setting not help lighten your head and your heart. Bully for you for not accepting helplessness! Great inspiration. Thank you. kc

The trouble is that you never really appreciate where you live 😊 It might not help but I feel better feeling that there is something I can do

Beautiful picture. I think exercise helps us both mentally and physically! Good job!

A beautiful picture. I’m glad the walk helped you feel better. It’s hard sometimes to get the fluids in. I find adding some flavour to the water helps give me a bit of variety. I hope your enzymes stay level for your next chemo.

Hi Julie what a lovely post thank you and oh my I do love that view!

So I’m not metastatic but during my treatment in 2017 my liver count went thro the roof. I was offered the choice of deferring chemo for a week. I said what diffe nice will continuing chemo make? She said nothing so I went ahead wit it. I also asked on my online forum for guidance and one lady said she had stopped taking omeprazole and that had reduced her liver count. So I stopped taking it too - it had been prescribed for the nausea I was experiencing but I chose nausea over liver destruction as I could cope with the nausea. Omeprazole is also prescribed for digestive disorder in people not having chemo.

I hope this helps. Lots of love Deb xx

Thanks Deb, yes many of the anti nausea drugs impact on the liver and also impact on vit d absorption. I’m prescribed omeprazole for indigestion and I’ve replaced it with aloe Vera juice which seems to work just as well for the indigestion. I think it’s a difficult balancing act finding the right level of chemo that works but doesn’t distress the liver when the mets are in the liver.

Glad to hear that you are not metastatic. I hope what you read on this forum takes some of the fear away of becoming so 😊

Thanks Sandra, I bought a juicing machine 2 yrs ago and have never used it. Think it’s time to get it out of the cupboard.

Yes, this area is lovely, not dramatic but gentle and easily overlooked 😊

Bless you Julie I’ve got another year to go........

Sadly I just lost a friend after just 2 years of mets..........perhaps I shouldn’t put that on here but I must admit I am struggling with the loss........my sincere apologies if this is inappropriate but in All honesty where else can I say it? Sorry again 😥♥️

We all understand your loss and how personal it feels. There are so many more treatment options but they don’t work for everyone but they are working for many more than they used to. I think that is the ‘gift’ if you can call it that, that this condition gives. The realisation that no one is promised tomorrow, anyone can get hit by a bus, so you have to make the most of today, and I think a lot of the ladies on here follow that philosophy. 😊

Much appreciated Julie thank you, yes there are many good stories to hear about esp. here thank you 😌♥️

Hi Julie,

I hope that your liver enzymes soon go down. Perhaps you can talk to your GP or pharmacist about what you can do about your liver enzymes. I’m glad you enjoyed your walk. It looks lovely.

Can you have them give you a liter of saline?

Julie,

Beautiful picture. Most of us need to drink more water and exercise more.

I plead guilty. Blessings, Hannah

Nice scenery! Thank you for reminding us how important to hydrate and exercise I also work remote. Reiterating the benefits of juicing my husband actually bought one on line and was a bit surprised how big and powerful it was. He juices and I sometimes drink them. I find it a little challenging keeping up with all the healthy habits but it is worth it!

Julie2233,

Very pretty! Where is this? I am in the US; in Silicon Valley, since before it was called that!😬

Sincerely,

Colleen

It looks very beautiful there. My good friends are from Sheffield. I live in the heart of Silicon Valley. Been here since before it was called Silicon Valley.

My father’s family were from Sheffield and I still have family there. That is another beautiful part of the country.

I’ve only been to Florida but my son now lives in Minnesota and he quite often travels around the States. What is Silicon Valley like?

USIrishcolleen profile image
USIrishcolleen in reply to Julie2233

They call it that because the silicon chips that are made in computers were invented here. I am a 2 mile walk to Apple Computer corporate offices.

Julie - It's so interesting the way you asked that question, i.e. "what is silicon valley like?" . I've never really thought of it as a strict geography, like an actual valley, although I imagine it is, but to me it's more more like an idea/movement that has taken root basically south of San Francisco, maybe (?) centered on Palo Alto? I'm not sure of the real definition of where it is...

When I was working, I would travel regularly to Palo Alto, so I'll describe that. Really nice downtown area, great restaurants/coffee/ shops/etc. Very high priced homes and some mixed economic areas. The area didn't strike me as someplace you'd like really go out of your way to move to, but would be happy if work or life sort of made you move there. But...

But...Once you drive up and over the mountains to the Pacific coast, you are in some of the most astonishingly beautiful areas in the country and, in my view, the world. Any time I had to go to "Silicon Valley" for work, I always extended the trip so that I could enjoy the areas nearby, i.e. within 30-90 minutes. I can almost see/feel it now, literally a different world, entirely separate environment, going up the mountains then coming down, often through mist, to the coastline. :)

I'm not sure why you asked but if you have friends/family there, I would certainly encourage any chance to visit them! :)

I’ve seen pictures of Silicon Valley but I know that when I used to travel the pictures presented were often very different to how the area really was 😊

The pictures of Silicon Valley I have seen have left me with a sense that’s it’s just hot and arid and you tell me that the surrounding area is beautiful. I know it’s called a valley but I’ve never had any sense of mountains or coast and now i do. I can’t visit but you’ve enlarged the picture in my mind. You’ve given me a better sense of the place. Thank you 😊 Jxx

Hi Julie! Yes, much of California is like that, such different terrains/eco-systems, all pile on top of one another! It's part of why I love that area so much... :) So many happy memories...

If you want to get a feel for how things look over the ridge of mountains, search "Santa Cruz", "Monterey", "Big Sur" (my god, the trees are mind blowing!!)!

Like mine, your visits will likely be "virtual", but still wonderful!

Be well, I'm sending my very best,

Lynn

Hi Julie -

What a beautiful photo! You're lucky to live in such a scenic area... :)

I'm so sorry about the issues you're having -- and your doc's dismissive comment!

It sounds like the hydration and exercise are a good idea (as you note, even mentally!), but my immediate thought was "coffee".

I was doing some research recently for my aunt, who has serious liver disease, and found something about coffee -- e.g. four cups per day (!!!) -- being very beneficial for the liver. I didn't want to pass along this advice since it seemed somehow counter-intuitive to me, but I just googled and, for what it's worth, here was the top result:

"In numerous studies, it has been noted that coffee consumption has been associated with decreased levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP)".

I would def do your own research or ask someone who knows more than I do (which would basically be anyone...), but it's worth a shot? For some reason, I feel like black coffee is best...Plus, if it won't hurt you, it could certainly give you more energy to take walks in your beautiful part of the world! :)

Take care, and I do hope you're able to get it resolved, please let us know...

Best,

Lynn

Now you mention it,I have heard of this before, thank you for reminding me. I’m usually an addicted tea drinker but with the changes in my taste because of the chemo I just can’t drink it. So I’ll definitely try coffee.

I am very lucky to live in such a lovely area, just need to get out more 😊

What a stunning landscape and beautiful place to walk. Good luck with those enzymes. Mine are through the roof and between a GI doc and my new oncologist, they're trying to get to the bottom of the problem. Hope you are able to have your next chemo session! Keep enjoying those awe-inspiring views and chugging the H2O! Blessings to you!
