Can’t sleep

I live in Nova Scotia, Canada and yesterday an evil man dressed as an RCMP officer and driving what looked like a police car killed 19 people throughout our province. They are still searching crime scenes which include homes he burnt to the ground for more victims. As it unfolded he was pursued and neutralized 10 minutes from my home. It was terrifying and all I have been able to do is sit in shock and cry. I couldn’t sleep last night thinking of the officer who was killed and the many families that had lost loved ones. With Covid-19 people are restricted to their homes and cannot go and see the families. It puts my cancer in a different light. I have a bone scan on Wednesday and I have been really worried but now it just doesn’t seem important. Just wanted to share with all of you.

So sorry for you and your community. It is all over the news here. It does put things in perspective. This lunatic stole at least 19 lives. Between violence like this, our illness and covid, it does seem too much to bear at times. we don’t expect news like this from Canada. Unfortunately, we deal with this kind of violence regularly in the States.

in reply tonstonerocks

That is what we are all saying. This doesn’t happen in Canada.

Hi Sarah,

I heard about this dreadful incident on the news. I am so very sorry to hear about what has happened. My heart goes out to those who were killed and to you as well. Please take good care of yourself. It is a relief to know that you are safe.

Take care,

Sophie

Thank you Sophie. We are all still in shock. ❤️

Sending you a virtual hug and prayers. It seems there’s no place that’s immune to violence ...or the new virus. It does put cancer in a different light...at least we know the enemy and have tools/meds to fight it. My heart breaks for all the wonderful people who’s lives are forever changed.

Hi Sarah (my fellow 🇨🇦)

My heart breaks at this terrible tragedy. Nova Scotia is such a beautiful and serene part of Canada that it is hard to imagine such violence taking place. I have family nearby in New Brunswick and have been to Nova Scotia with my family.

No words can take away any of the pain but know we are all grieving with you. ❤️

Sarcie.

I heard/saw this on the news, in Australia. I was thinking to myself, “what would that be like if I happened here in my neighbourhood.?” I’m so sorry you had to have this kind of trauma happening. And of course now you are totally traumatised. I feel for you, and all your neighbourhood and community. What kind of world is this that we live in that people that will go out and do this?

Last month a mentally ill man went on a stabbing spree through about five different suburbs of Melbourne. He killed two people an seriously injured a lot of people too. I was watching the news the other night and they were talking about the funerals and the family’s, and how at this time..... well we all know the rest.

It’s just so devastating!

Yes. It puts our health or, not health to the side. Doesn’t it?

Take care of yourself and let yourself cry those tears. It’s frightening. Really frightening what you went through inside your lockup and what you imagined going on!

Thank you Chris. It’s not the way we expect to hear about Canada in the news.

Thank you Sandra. He had to have been planning this for a very long time 😞. 🤞🏻the scan is the same as before.

I am so very sorry to hear this. You are right, the man is EVIL. May the souls of those who died Rest In Peace. And may you find peace of mind and erase the horror of what happened from your mind. Hugs and prayers.

Dearest Sarcie!

I saw that on the news today! I am so sorry for your anxiety—as if the world wasn’t already overloaded by stress!! Have the police established a motive or did this guy just go over the deep end?

Please know you are in my heart and prayers!! And many prayers for your scan! It’s still important for your peace of mind!! Bless you always!!

Linda.

in reply toSeattleMom

They haven’t said what his motive was as they are still going through all of the crime scenes. He burned down 5 homes and sadly they believe there are more victims in each ruin 😞

Thank you, I’ve had an increase in pain so I’m worried the bone scan may not be like the last one 🤞🏻

What a tragedy for all of Canada! Such a beautiful, peaceful country! We’ve boated up to Victoria from San Juan Island many summers. It never gets old! 🇨🇦 ❤️

Don’t get over anxious about the bone pain, Sarcie. My mets were all in my spine and I’ve had recurring back aches since I was first diagnosed about 2 1/2 years ago. Usually a couple of Tylenol and/or a heating pad works wonders. I think we have to accept that bones were already damaged prior to radiation. You’ll be in my thoughts and prayers!

Sarcie,

I am in Santa Clara, California, and I saw this on the news and was SO SHOCKED at just how evil the person that did this in Nova Scotia was. I am SO sorry for the RCMP woman that died, and her family. Yes, it must feel awful not to be able to see family members after such an awful, senseless act.

Try to get some rest. You need to take care of yourself , and to rest because of your cancer.

Please take care.

Sincerely,

Colleen

in reply toUSIrishcolleen

Thank you Colleen. I haven’t slept well the past two nights. My mind wanders to the families of the victims and then to the “what if’s”. I’m hoping after my vine scan tomorrow I will relax a bit and then maybe I will sleep.

Hi Sarcie

I haven’t seen this in the news but it will be in today’s paper I would imagine

This mass killing of innocent people doesn’t happen in UK very often either and when it does it’s more shocking

I know how upset you must be but there’s nothing you can do...are you close enough to any of the families?.. could send condolences

My advice to you is to avoid the news and the papers as it will upset you more...also could your doctor prescribe some sleeping meds for a week or so to get you through this?...as a community you’re unable to come together in this crisis due to Covid 19 which is isolating and unhelpful to the grieving process and especially for those families involved...it’s unimaginable to think how they must be feeling

Do you have a neighbour to telephone?...someone you like a lot?

Do look after yourself ...have a good cry and try to distract yourself

I know I’m no help but I’ll think of you today

Barb xx

in reply toBarbteeth

Thank you Barb. Your ideas are wonderful. My province has come together to support the families that lost loved ones. There is a Facebook page set up where they will have a virtual vigil in the 24th. Not being able to physically go to memorials because of Covid restrictions this will give all of us a chance to grieve.

Yesterday I checked social media in the morning and then put my phone down and my husband and I worked on a jigsaw puzzle. It gave us something to concentrate on. I didn’t touch my phone till bedtime.

Barbteeth profile image
Barbteeth in reply to

Dear Sarcie

I hope you had a better nights sleep and feel a bit more settled

It’s good that you can have a vigil in 24th

A friend of mine died in March and there was no funeral because of Covid but on the day she was cremated all her friends lit a candle and posted pictures of them on Facebook...it helped and was far less upsetting than a funeral ...( i tend to avoid those anyway as I don’t cope )so this was a good alternative under the circumstances

Barb xx

in reply toBarbteeth

Still struggling to sleep. As they investigate the area of the shootings, there were 5 homes burned to the ground and sadly there are more victims at those sites. The numbers keep getting higher 💔😞.

People have been tying blue ribbons and NS tartan ribbons to things on our yards as a sort of remembrance for the victims. It’s a small thing we can do along with a candle in the window.

Thanks for thinking of me Barb. ❤️

I am so sorry! I can only imagine how terrifying this was for you and all around you! No wonder you can't sleep! All that Adrenalin flooding your brain! Sure would push cancer aside. I agree with you and others here who say this man committed so many evil acts with such horrible impact on so many. His family must be overwhelmed, too. And things like this have such a ripple effect. I hope your scan on Wed. goes well and that you don't have to wait long to learn the results. Sending love and prayers to you and all those who havee been hurt in any way by this horrible killing spree!

in reply toPJBinMI

Thank you! My entire province is reeling. We are the second smallest province in Canada and mostly small towns. Not in a million years would I have thought this could happen.

Just know that all of Canada is reeling. Couldn't have imagined this down there. I am thinking about you and all of the people affected by this. I hope they are reporting all the signs of reaching out to everyone in Nova Scotia but especially all the families. Many places here in Ontario and I am sure everywhere have their flags lowered and the CN Tower in Toronto was lit in blue as a signal to you all. It is wonderful to have the internet, at least to keep in touch. As you know, Canadians are with you and Americans also.

Got my fingers crossed also and my toes for your scan today.

Warm hugs, June S.

in reply to8576

Thank you June. I’m nervous about the scan results and also nervous to go to the hospital with Covid-19 out there.

I wouldn't have thought this would happen in Nova Scotia either, or anywhere in Canada. My mother's parents were both born and grew up in Toronto, so I think of myself as half Canadian! Know that alot of US here in MIchigan want to stand with you! I wish there was a way to make certain that nothing like this happens again.

in reply toPJBinMI

We have strict gun control but sadly when someone plans like this for a long time they are able to find what they want. The internet may be wonderful but you can buy anything there.

Sarcie I am so sorry for you and your community. The unimaginable has happened in some of your small towns within your province.

Myself Living in a village of 1,000 people in Ontario these hideous crimes just are not suppose to happen here in Canada. These acts of violence will have such a lasting effect on so many families it is such a shame .

When you mentioned about it putting your MBC in a different light I agree , as awful a MBC diagnosis is there are worse things that many of us and others have had to deal with .

Sending healing thoughts to your beautiful province .

Luann

in reply to

Thank you Luann. This tragedy has changed the lives of so many families. These small communities will never be the same. Doors will be locked and windows kept closed ....😞

Prayers for you and your neighbors. It is such a frightening thing to happen. I wish I could think of some words of comfort but the U.S. is in shock that this could happen to our Canadian friends. A lot of folks are holding you close and praying for you. Blessings Hannah

Release those tears. Release those fears as the murderer has gone. You must look after yourself. This is absolutely tragic and we will all be thinking of you. Try and stay strong. The shock in still raw in your mind. Talk to your nearest and dearest and try and reassure one another. Sending you virtual hugs.

Dear Sarcie. It is with deep sorrow that I respond to your pain and suffering. I hope you can find some comfort from friends and family. I don't know how to comfort you except to say that I am so very, very sad and sorry. And it frightens me because it appears that this has has come as shock to everyone. It is so sad that this person's pain was not known to someone. If it was known maybe it could have been prevented. I know it must terrify you to think that you had a monster living in your neighbourhood. I believe everyone in Canada must be in deep shock. And right now we might not know how to understand this crime. But we do need to know how this can happen to prevent it We should never let this happen again. But how can anyone get their head around such a heinous crime. I don't know how we will ever find our peaceful lifestyle again knowing this kind of insane crime can be possible in what we believed was our basically sane country. I hope you find peace and healing in your life. All of us ladies have our own personal pain to deal with but it does put into perspective how much other kinds of pain are in the world right now. I am going to try to remember to smile at people who look sad. I hope we all can heal. Hugs Marlene

Thank you for your well spoken words Marlene. It does make one realize that others are going through worse.

As a Canadian from Ontario, I just want to let you know that the rest of Canada is totally devastated and in a state of shock as to how and why something like this could happen in a beautiful Province like Nova Scotia with so very many wonderful people always opening their hearts to help others. This deranged individual went on a rampage and we have yet to learn as why this could have been. He was a professional denturist, well respected in his community and never known to Police. And, as always, it's the truly innocent that suffer. Our hearts go out to you and all the people of your Province (I have a granddaughter in Halifax who is also totally devastated by this), as well as the families of the victims who live in Nova Scotia and all across Canada. I agree with you about your bone scan. I just had mine last Thursday and am awaiting to see the oncologist for the results. As you said, it now puts things in a different light. Thoughts and prayers are with you and the Province of Nova Scotia, the victims and their families.

I thought of you when I heard the news and wondered if you were close to this violence. What a shock. We are already in a shocked state between cancer and Covid-19, now this. Be cheered by all the good people who are reaching out and mourning with you. Hugs, Elaine

Dear Sarcie,

I'm late with a response, I'm sorry, but I wanted to echo some of what the others were saying regarding this tragedy. I so admire your country and it's history and policies. This is hopefully a horrible aberration...

Please take care and I have such faith in your country and leadership, I'm confident that you all will get through this, but it is no doubt very painful.

Sending love,
