throat clearing

Hello everyone!

My oophorectomy was successful. I'm a little sore and tired, but glad it's over. Coronavirus has officially hit us here in the U.S. My school is closed for 2 weeks or longer (which is probably great timing for me).

My question is, do any of you constantly need to clear your throat? My onc said it is post nasal drip, but I've been doing it since September. I don't notice it, but my family does. Just wondering if it might be something specific to either Letrozole and Ibrance, or the cancer itself? It doesn't make sense, but thought I'd ask.

I hope you all are well!

Alana

Hi Alana,

Thanks for sharing your news about the oophorectomy. I'm glad the surgery was a success.

Six months seems like a long time to have this throat issue you mentioned. Can you speak to your oncologist again and have it investigated? Maybe you could do with some medication to help clear it up. There's no reason to continue putting up with it if there is a simple solution to the problem.

Coronavirus seems to be affecting us all in some way around the world. There have been a few deaths here in the UK and thousands have tested positive for it, but it looks like things are going to get worse before they get better. There has been one reported case in my county so far.

Hi Sophie,

I've spoken to him, and he thinks it is an allergy issue with post nasal drip. I'm going to try taking a mild antihistamine every day and see what happens!

Stay safe in these crazy times!

Hi Alana,

I hope that the antihistamine works for you.

My husband and I were going to head out this afternoon, but changed our minds. We would probably end up getting flattened by people panic buying!!

My post nasal drip seems to have gotten worse since going on Ibrance. I have bad pollen and mold allergies and my allergy medication isn’t working as well as it used to. Elaine PS, I’m glad your surgery went well!

I agree it could be acid reflux, because I have it also..the acid buildup is really thick and at times really hard to get out of your throat..I am experiencing it as I am replying right now. I have some medication for it, it even gets in my nostrils. I have medication for that also..had to go to the allergic specialist for it..the medication for my nose works really fast.. I have allergies also with my cancer been having allergies most of my life. I hope this has been a help to You. 🥰

I have this problem. But I’m on a bio phosphate which can cause dysphasia. Always a trade off with these things.

Yes I have that problem so they gave me a nose spray that works great when I need it.

Glad you’re recovering well from your surgery. I too have noticed the feeling that I need to clear my throat over the past 6 or more months. When I asked my oncologist about it he too thought that mild allergy & post nasal drip is a likely cause. Suggested trying an antihistamine. I have been taking a generic version of Claritin daily. I notice no side effects and believe it seems to work fairly well.

That's what I'm going to try! Thank you!

So glad your surgery is over and you are recovering.

I also have post nasal drip.. Could be my allergies and/ or my acid reflux. I use saline nasal spray and fluctasone nasal spray.

I have the post nasal drip also and hate it. Have to keep a Kleenex in my hand constantly. I’ve tried several nasal sprays, Claritin and Zyrtec,Sudafed and nothing stops it. My primary care tells me older people have more problems with this also. Interesting today was the first time I heard it might be caused by Ibrance/letrazole. I’ve been on these 2 drugs since February 2016 and might be my problem. I’m going to mention it to my oncologist next trip. Thanks for the info!!!

Hi Alana,

I’m going to approach this differently with my suggestion. How much water do you drink? We need to drink a lot with this drug and I would try adding a extra bottle of water to your daily intake and see if that gets rid of it before asking for extra medications.

I talk a lot with my job and notice I have the same probably very quickly if I didn’t hydrate well before class. That may even be a more simple solution for a number of you here , seeing as you have the same issue. My throat clearing is actually the first sign to myself that I forgot to drink enough!

Hope it works for you!

Hello!

I drink about 64-96 ounces of water every day - I'm a water drinker, but I can definitely try to drink more!

Thanks for the advice!

Hi Sandra,

Thanks for the advice! I am going to try an antihistamine and drink a lot of water and see if that helps!

Take care and stay safe!

Hi Alana,

Glad to hear that your surgery went well. Take this time to rest and be good to yourself.

I have been on Ibrance and Letrozole for almost a year now and generally feel well. I do get some slight back and rib aches but they don't last too long but I do have a mystery cough. It is like a cold and lasts a few days and then goes away. Then a week or two later it is back. I cough a lot and have to blow my nose and then in a few days it goes away again. Sometimes I am okay for weeks. One of my doctors say it could be an allergy. But I feel it is related to the drugs but I probably will never know because the doctors don't seem concerned. I generally feel quite well so I will just live with what ever this is. But you should continue to talk to your doctors about your situation because they might find a solution to help you. Stay safe and protect your self against the horrible Corona virus. I wear a mask (homemade with a beautiful fabric) when I go anywhere that I might encounter people. We have been slow to adopt masks here in BC because our doctors don't encourage it but I believe they protect me and they protect the people I meet. I get compliments on my masks and so do my adult kids who are wearing them when they go shopping. So it is not embarrassing. My husband wears his too but says he feels like a bank robber. Heh...heh...he has watched too many Western movies, I think.

Stay happy. Hugs Marlene
