Wine and other alcohol interaction

I love a glass of white or red wine. Is it true I have to stop if I start Ibrance?

Did you doctor tell you that? My oncologist said that a drink now and then is fine.

in reply to Bluebird77

No, she didn’t. But I read something about alcohol exacerbating mouth sores when you take Ibrance.

That makes sense. I am fortunate that I've only occasionally had mild mouth sores. I've been on Ibrance a year and a half. I have a drink now and then and have not had any issues.

The information given by my pharmacist with my prescription says no alcohol.

I’m on ibrance and my mets are in my liver. My oncologist says that as my liver is functioning well there is absolutely no problem with drinking wine.

I believe the only thing we need to avoid is grapefruit.

Hi, I am from the UK.... When I received Ibrance and side effect documents from my hospital it stated that I should not drink any alcohol with Ibrance .... so have had any alcohol since Dec 2017 😩 hope this helps :)

I’m also from the U.K. I’ve had no literature stating no alcohol and my oncologist definitely said it’s okay.

I’ve spoken to a lot of ladies who have done really well on ibrance and who enjoy a drink.

Also, I drink red wine. 😳

Sandig1948 who told you no red wine?

We just can’t win can we!

I read somewhere recently that we shouldnt be eating bread!! Then I found an article on the inspire website debunking that. What a relief.

I find wine a real pleasure and I think we need little pleasures in our lives now more than ever. 😀🍷

Strange I think I still have a leaflet stating no alcohol at all , I have to find it .... I miss my white wine

I drink white wine most every day at least 2 glasses. If not, why not. Life is very short!

Hello

If there was a real interaction with alcohol then it would be listed in the drug interaction leaflet..only grapefruit juice is not recommended

Chill out ladies and have a drink if you fancy one.. I do and feel fine on Ibrance

Totally agree with you!! My oncologist said wine was fine, just don't overdo it! I have 2 glasses red wine a day. Was cancer free for almost 4 years (Stage 4 initial diagnosis). Having wine with friends made this journey so much better!!

That's amazing! You were diagnosed with stage 4 to begin with and was cancer free for 4 years afterwards.? Hope it continues to go well!!

Actually when I first replied 16 days ago, I had not received results of a biopsy that I believed would show bone Mets. However, it came back clear. Was told it was scar tissue, not cancer. Incredibly relieved!! So, yes, almost 4 years with NED. i am so happy I found this site and all of you incredible women.

That is wonderful news so where is the cancer if it’s not in the bones? What treatment have they had you on from the beginning? I love to hear all these great stories. Keep up the good work.

Obig profile image
Obig in reply to Juliandrea

Well, my tumor markers had risen above normal level for 4 months. So we did CT and Pet scan, which were both clear. So we did an MRI that showed "activity" on t12 of spine. But biopsy showed just scar tissue. We will be watching tumor markers, as they have been reliable in the past. I had liposuction right before the markers started rising, and I really think something from that procedure could have caused them to rise. Best to all.

Thank you for your reply. I really am praying for you that things stay good. What is the dr saying is next of tumor markers Are up but scans show nothing?

Juliandrea profile image
Juliandrea in reply to Obig

Sorry missed that part, so dr will be watching tumor markers closely, did they explain why they are going up?

Obig profile image
Obig in reply to Juliandrea

We still do not know for sure why tumor markers are going up, since all other diagnostic tests show NED. What is your situation? I am invasive lobular carcinoma.

Juliandrea profile image
Juliandrea in reply to Obig

Thank you for your response. I really think that Ibrance, Letrozole and zometa will work for you. I have the same , invasive lobular carcinoma, with Mets to the bones. Have been on this cocktail for 5 months and going for scans at the end of September, but so far my Timor markers continue to go down. I pray that I have at least 20 years, it has happened pre Ibrance for many. I am only 53 and with children and I have a lot to live for so we keep moving forward to live as best as possible. This site has helped me a lot to stay focused.

PS I have been and am continuing on Ibrance Letrozole and zometa.

I was not told about not drinking so I probably have a glass of win e a week. I've found spicy food gives me mouth sores ,regular toothpaste and regular mouthwash. So I only use biotin toothpaste and mouthwash.

As long as liver is fine , I'm going to treat myself.

I could see nothing on the paperwork or Ibrance website regarding not having alcohol, apart from not drinking red wine.

I have a large glass of white most evening or Rose. I think it’s all within reason according to my Dr and pharmacist. I try and drink the amount of water suggested so giving my liver a chance!

My Onc after my first month, when I felt very unwell asked was there anything different I was eating /drinking, I could only pinpoint Pomegranite juice. I had started having it daily thinking it would do me good. In fact he said under no circumstances should you drink pomegranate juice because it almost doubles the effect on your liver. I assumed it would also apply to the whole fruit. The website also mentions not eating Star fruit.

Unless your Onc tells you differently, a little of what you fancy does you good!

I am in the U.K.

I wasn't on Ibrance that long but I never developed mouth sores and my doctor said it was okay to have a drink or glass of wine. He said to keep it to about 6-7 oz.

I have continued to drink... several glasses a week and occasionally scotch or another hard liquor

I have just returned from the Okanagan valley Bc canada where I did some wine tasting tours

I have not been told to avoid alcohol though I might add that I feel less like having it

Try taking a milk thistle twice a day to help protect your liver. I don't drink a lot but on the weekend if I want glass or two of wine I drink it. Do I think I should? No but i do it anyway. Now, I do NOT drink alcohol when my counts are low. I just keep taps on the blood and choose accordingly.

Klamato profile image

My friend told me about milk thistle. Just wondering about med interaction. Did you ask the doctor about milk thistle and if it's okay to take with Ibrance?

blms profile image
blms in reply to Klamato

Look up slone kettering cancer center and herb interactions. There is a wealth of good research and information on herbs and interactions, etc. I have been taking milk thistle for some time now, even before MBC but after I had BC and wanted to protect my liver. I can't tell you that has made the difference but I can tell you that my liver counts are always on or below the low 20;s. So, I stay with it.

My oncologist told me I could have wine. This week my radiologist told me one or two glasses will not hurt me. So enjoy a glass of wine. Remember quality of life is what my oncologist always says.

My doc never said there were restrictions on alcohol. I drink Thurs-Sat pretty much all the time. Also met in liver. I told my doc I should be the case study! My liver functions have never varied. Quality of life ladies!

I'm with you girl! I will continue on my way! I enjoy wine, so Im doing it unless they tell me otherwise! Rock on!

My oncologist told me that if I told him I had a glass of wine with dinner every night, he’d be fine with that. He doesn’t want me partying it up which is easy for me since I’m not a big drinker.

Klamato profile image

I have 2 glasses of wine most everyday and feel fine. The doctor would prefer that I have one, but whatever! At this point I am enjoying what I can. I will be talking about this with the oncologist this week.

Wine is fine. Make sure it’s good wine. Life is too short to drink bad wine. Cheers!
