After my second lupron shot yesterday, I am looking into having my ovaries removed. Onc is on board. This would eliminate the shot that really had no end date.
Looking for thoughts on the procedure and recovery time from you all.
Thank in advance

I got my ovaries removed February this year. I was very emotional about removing. But tell you what, I am very happy they were removed.
1- little to no scar to remind you about the surgery.
2- recovery time is very fast. Though I was low from ibrance cycle.
3- no more shots and it's monthly side effects. I was getting zoladex.
4- the biopsy came back to show the cancer spread to the ovaries. I was not expecting that.
Overall it wasn't a big surgery, recovery was easy and short. I did have gas issues from all the air they pumped into me for the laparoscopic method of the surgery. Nobody warned me about it.
When you heal completely, things will start to settle in gently and your body will feel kind of lighter (can't describe it well) over time. Hot flashes my increase but gently reduce.
Those are my experiences. I may have missed out somethings.
Full recovery was about 1 week, but I was able to go for walk on the 3rd or 4th day after surgery. I had only ovaries taken out though. I'm 36 years old
I was diagnosed in 7/2016 & had ovaries out in 10/2016. I knew I was done having children & knew it could greatly help reduce the hormones that were feeding my cancer. Surgery was easy & recovery was short. I had surgery on a Wednesday & felt pretty much back to normal by Sunday.
I had my ovaries removed about three years ago because my body was producing so much estrogen they thought it was a good idea. I will say if you are married or have an active sex life reconsider this. I know for me and one other friend that had her ovaries removed that it completely diminished my sex drive overnight. I am on continued medication for the rest of my life and if I had known that removing my ovaries would completely ruined my sex drive, I probably would’ve taken the shot. That’s just my two cents I would talk to my doctor about it. If your estrogen receptor positive you will not be able to take any more hormones that have estrogen.
That was my hesitation 2 years ago. My friend told me the same experience. I feel like after 3 months on folsadex that I might already be in menopause. Prior, I was down to every other month for Aunt Flo’s arrival.
Can I ask how old you are? I always had fibroids and had an ablation fine years ago yo help stop the heavy cycles. I am 65 now and still think about removing all as I feel this contributed to my estrogen positive breast ca.
Hi. I had this done in 2016 right after being diagnosed stage iv. The surgery was outpatient and done laparoscopically and it was not too bad as far as surgeries go. I didn't have the gas or constipation because the surgeon prescribed the medications beforehand. I think recovery was about a week. However, I had not started any other meds yet. The hot flashes started within a few days and other changes as well, as it throws you into immediate menopause. The surgeon asked if I wanted my uterus out too and I said no. She said she needed to make sure there was no cancer if she was going to leave it so while I was under she did a d&c and everything was biposied: fortunately it all came back negative.
I’m on board too. Been doing folsadex shots monthly. I’m going for August. Think the recovery is expected to be 4-6 weeks. I got a consult 2 years ago when I was stage 2. I figure it’s one less shot and my journey into menopause so far has been ok. Sometimes night sweats but I always prefer to be warmer instead of cold. The night sweats were entertaining in January and February. I’d go to bed all bundled up and wake up in a T-shirt...good luck
I, too was having Lupron shots and opted to have my ovaries removed at age 49. Recovery was very short and I had minimal pain. The one thing I did notice was increased depression. I’ve never been a depressed person but I will tell you this was no fun. I had huge waves of debilitating depression at times. I quickly got on an antidepressant and this helped quite a bit. All in all I would definitely opt to have my ovaries out rather than continue with Lupron shots. Best of luck to you!
