Hi, I've recently had a mastectomy and reconstruction with an implant after being diagnosed with DCIS. I've now been recommended to have radiotherapy treatment and concerned about the risk of lung cancer and the destruction of the implant. Is there anyone who has similar concerns? Really not sure whether to go ahead or not. Lolamoggs

Radiotherapy dilemma
I went to a BC Conference recently where they spoke about hyperfractionation (more dosage over short period of time as opposed to standard therapy) where studies have shown more % of complications for immediate reconstruction than delayed reconstruction.
Hi,
You are not alone with your concerns. Each one of us that has walked down that road has been very concerned. So many decisions in so short a time. I would suggest that you talk with your plastic surgeon, the radiologist, and maybe your breast surgeon. If you aren’t satisfied with the way they have listened to you and responded, get a second opinion. It’s a very scary time for you with lots of unknowns. The more information you have from trusted sources will help you get through this time.
You may want to call the SHARE Helpline at 844-275-7427 and ask to speak with someone that has had a similar diagnosis and treatment. I always find it to be very helpful to speak with someone that has had a similar situation to myself.
I wish you peace as you go through this time in your life.
Thank-you for your reply. I'm waiting for an appointment with the radio oncologist. I'm disappointed that my breast surgeon didn't advise me that I'd probably need radiotherapy and went ahead with the reconstruction knowing that it could destroy the implant. My main concerns though are what may happen to surrounding organs. Thank-you for your helpful advice and good wishes.
There are definitely risks of second surgeries, failure of implants, etc. from radiation after recon. With DCIS are you sure you need radiation? If on the left side, make sure they avoid the heart. Known damages 20 years down the road. Acupuncture may help reduce risks as well as Turmeric/curcumin (natural substances). Here is the Evidence-based Handout I created for my nonprofit Annie Appleseed Project, to help reduce treatment toxicities.

Radiation acts to reduce risk of local recurrence. It does not necessarily impact survival in many early stage cancers. BTW, DCIS is no longer actually considered cancer, but a pre. Dietary changes and other lifestyle issues may be helpful in reducing risk, making you healthier and your immune system stronger. I did all that with invasive breast cancer (years of tiny tumors) without chemo or radiation or hormonals. Wow, still here 25+ years later. Follow your own intuition.
