Two weeks ago, I had a simple mastectomy for Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (non-invasive). I am relieved that they got all of it, but still dealing with a drainage bulb and moderate pain from an infection. Although I've had surgeries before, dealing with cancer is new to me.

Hi,
I’m so sorry to hear about your DCIS diagnosis and surgerical problems.
A diagnosis of DCIS is very scary. While it is stage zero and many say it’s not cancer because there been no invasion, the treatment is almost the same as if it were more advanced breast cancer. That’s because no one knows whose DCIS will become invasive breast cancer. And while it may be called a “simple mastectomy” there is nothing simple about it. It’s a significant surgery with a strong emotional component. It’s a big adjustment.
Fortunately this precancerous diagnosis carries with it a survival rate of almost 100%. But that’s of little comfort as you deal with drains and surgical complications.
At SHARE we have a breast cancer helpline. You can call it at 844-ASK-SHARE. Ask to speak with someone that has been diagnosed with DCIS and, and like you, has had a simple mastectomy. Talking with someone who has been down the same trail as you can be really helpful. I know that it helped me a lot.
I send you healing thoughts.
