Would a chat room be a good idea?

steve57 profile image

I was lying here kicking my legs around and after trying to listen to music or watch the telly to calm me down and failing miserably again I wondered if a chat room on here would be a good idea. I have no idea if one is easy or expensive to set up, or even if it would be used by many people anyway.

Hi sal, i can use the internet and e-mail etc but that's as far as my computer knowledge goes, so setting one up is way beyond me. I'm still wondering how a tv picture used to travel through the air and appear on my telly :-)

Nope not on here, plenty of chat forums around and you can always start a group on FB? This site is about health????

Sorry Sal, just my opinion.

Health is exactly what I intended it to be used for. An awful lot of people have talked about how much their lives are being made a misery by some of the ramifications caused as a direct result of their rls. Sleep deprivation is one that is high on the list of many, which can lead to depression in a lot of people. You are right about this site being about health and coping with the physical problems of rls is bad enough, but let's not forget that it can also trigger mental health problems as a direct result.

I'm sure that I wasn't the only one going out of my mind with rls in the wee small hours last night, and it was then that I thought the chat room idea.

I just thought that giving or getting support when you are at a very low ebb may be a valuable resource, especially if used whilst having a cuppa :-)

Gosh I only expressed an opinion!!!

And we all get low steve57

Just watch the tone and timbre of the 'chats' deteriorate!!! They do on all other rls 'chat' forums.

Of course we are entitled to our own opinions BobM. I was just replying to your question - "This site is about health????"

A chat room is a great idea, it is just that this site, from what I understand, does not have the capability of that. But, I am sure we could find you a place for chat rooms.:)

everyone's entitled to their opinion Bob :) maybe someone could start a RLS chatroom up but not on here think it's a good idea where ever it was , know this is about health RLS health ...

good to see you back Bob :)

good moaning all, well i think a chat room would be good, the only other i know of is to do with the usa site, rls foundation, and its not much good at all, cant get on it half the time. so yes i would use it

"They" told us the chat rm on the web site is not good either in a FB post a couple fo wks ago. so, I do not suggest that one either, when they admit it is no good. will snoop around, and maybe we can find an active one that some of us could join?

It would probably help some people to have a chat room. I know i wouldnt use it.. When i am having a bad night i rarely come on to my laptop....

But having said that, cant people just come on here to chat, when they are not sleeping..??

Or just have a separate page for chatting, or having a rant...?

Just my thoughts.... :)

Hi again, I like your idea of a rant page, though it would probably be very busy :-)

The main drawback about coming here to chat is not knowing who is awake and who isn't. I hope to join the sleeping bunch soon, that's if I can get this patch to work lol.

On the subject of the patch for a moment, I couldn't believe how small they are. My wife had transtec morphine patches a few years ago and it was about 3"x3" if not bigger, so I was delighted to see this tiny little patch. :-)

in reply to steve57

The 1mg patches are small, they get bigger if and when you have to up the dose....

I hate chat rms unless only two people are there. There are 6 different conversations going on at the same time, and for my sleep deprived brain, that is TOO much confusion. Only used them a couple of times all these yrs of RLS groups. Web sites set up this way, tell you when someone is up, and you can set it to get email notifications when someone posts. Facebook is a place where you get immediate feedback as long as the inmates are running the asylum, and we are keeping track of people looking for help. :)

Hi All,

I contacted HealthUnlocked about this earlier today and theyhave indicated that the idea has been discussed, but they were unable to give a time period or guarantee that it will happen. So I think we would have to work on the assumption that it's not going to happen. However, going on Elisse's suggestion, we could start a page/blog for those who are up and night and want to have a chat.

Hi Daragh, thanks for your reply. I was very low when I thought about that. I was thinking about how to be able to find out who was awake and wanted to talk to someone, and I came up with "just say hello." lol

So yes, I would agree that Elisse's suggestion is a good one.

There is of course the RLS-UK Facebook page which can also be used for chat.

I've always thought about using facebook but never got around to it. Hopefully I'll be asleep tonight, but if not i'll give it a go.

You should try Facebook. That is the beauty of FB. someone is ALWAYS awake, because of all the time zones. I talk to a lot of people in Australia when I am up. facebook is the way to go if you want to find someone awake 24 hrs a day. :) We will help you get friends, if you need them. I have many, many RLS friends on FB. :)

Hi again, I'm definitely going to set up an account anyway, but I have been getting some sleep the last few nights :-) I started the neuro patch a week ago and(fingers permanently crossed now lol) they seem to be helping. I'm only on the starter dose of 1mg, but although I still have the very hot feelings in my legs, the need to constantly shake my legs has reduced dramatically :-) As it's been only a week I want to wait a little while to see if my rls improves anymore before asking for an increased dose to try to relieve the heat feelings as well. In the meantime I am getting several hours sleep at a time, which is a miracle for me.

I really appreciate your reply nightdancer and thank you.

P.S. can I call you nd for short:-)

in reply to nightdancer

Facebook is a good idea. There are several RLS pages already. I joined one. When you're walking around all night, like a zombie it would be good to chat to someone else who is suffering the same. I have an iPad which is ideal for using on the move lol!

in reply to Daragh

Maybe a better idea to keep the chat page or whatever you come up with, in one place. Too confusing to have chats in two places.... And as it seems not everyone has a facebook account...

I did not read the posts above, so sorry. But this web site does not have that capability. I have found in my yahoo groups that the chat rms are useless most of the time. People get mad when they go to them, and no one is there. But, it's not happening on this web site, because there is no way to physically do it with the limited software that thet use. What I WOULD like to see on this web site, is "Time stamp" and a date, instead of "17 hrs ago", etc. :)

A thread could be started called The Night Owls, or The (Insert name) Cafe or similar and be a place for people to go on this site when unable to sleep. Not a chat room as such but it may be good for some to know of a thread which is always there and when one cannot sleep, one can commiserate with others in the same boat, so to speak.

Just a thought. It would have to be a thread at the top of the page all the time though otherwise it would be lost in the questions and blogs.

Kaarina :)

That's the sort of thing I was thinking about Kaarina. Even if it helps just a few of us it will be worth it..

Mind you, I think we'll need a big boat :-)

Steve :-)

Kaarina likes this :)

I think it would help more than only a few of us. It would be like a security blanket, knowing a place to go, open all hours to have a virtual beverage, doughnut and a chat.
