Doctors will say iron levels are 'normal' without explaining that normal limits are very wide and without knowing that RLS sufferers need higher levels of ferritin. You need the doctor to give you all the actual numbers from the test.

The February 2015 revised NICE Clinical Knowledge Summary on RLS - which your doctor should refer to - says:

Under Investigations: "Request a full iron assessment including ferritin, total iron-binding capacity, and percentage transferrin saturation. This should be measured in the early morning after an overnight fast, as anaemia is not a sufficiently sensitive marker for iron deficiency, which may precipitate or exacerbate RLS."

Under Management: "Address any underlying cause that may have precipitated or exacerbated restless legs syndrome (RLS). For example:

Iron deficiency anaemia, or serum ferritin less than 50–75 micrograms/L — investigate to identify a cause of iron deficiency and prescribe iron supplements (with vitamin C to aid absorption)"

Oral supplementation will be slow: depending on how low the ferritin and transferrin saturation numbers are, you may be able to get an infusion

I've been given ferrous fumarate one daily if I have a infusion for a immediate boost will it then be enough to take the daily iron tablet ?Ferritin levels a week ago was 12 no mention of saturate levels .

Should I ask for a haematology referral ?

I have my Fbt results and the heamaglobin levels were 125 within normal levels

I eat a healthy diet plenty of green veg and moderate red meat spinach smoothies made with water.

Ferrous fumarate is fine but take it every other day and follow the other advice in my reply.

You won't know until after you have full panel iron test 8 weeks after an infusion whether it will have raise your ferritin enough that you van take iron tablets to maintain it.

Ask GP for the latest serum ferritin and serum iron figures and ask for an iron infusion.Several UK haematology departments are aware that iron infusions are beneficial for RLS.

Where are you?

Not too far from Chris Murphy in Salford. He's excellent. He'll arrange iron infusions and prescribe Buprenorphine if necessary.
