Taurine

I probably asked this before, but as I am having trouble sleeping—actually just falling asleep—the V.A. will not prescribe any sleep agents to me because they say I have sleep apnea (without any tests). I have always had trouble falling asleep, but the falling asleep part is even harder now with this leg irritation from augmentation. I would like to know if it will be safe for me to try this Taurine for tonight - 1000 mg. tablet. I tried valerian root for a while but it seemed not to work. An aside; I have just read that zolpidem tartrate CAN have adverse effects on sleep apnea. O.K. However, there must be something less dangerous that will still work don't you think?

Yes you can try it. Other OTC options include valerian, chamomile, hops, L-tryptophan, glycine, snakeroot, lemon balm, skull cap, Indian Pipe and GABA.

Thanks. I have heard many negatives about skullcap and your liver, though.

I will cross that off my list. Thanks for the information.

Please don't take my word for it. Check it out. I bought some, on recommendation, on this site before I investigated the herb. Oh! well!

There is a reference to skullcap here: "a 43-year-old woman developed jaundice after taking a mixed herbal remedy that contained black cohosh. This herbal remedy also contained valerian and skullcap, which have been implicated in other cases of liver toxicity"

I use free meditation from YouTube. Always sends me to sleep. Audiobooks help as well.

Ashwagandha and L-Theanine can definitely help. For some time I took a very small dose of Melatonine (0.25mg). 0.5mg or less will help initiate sleep. To get that I took a 1mg sublingual tablet and broke it into 1/4 pieces. You can also get melatonin as a liquid and dose with a drop or two. Also melatonin is in some teas look for 0.5mg.
