Thinking about RLS sets it off!

I have noticed that having a fleeting thought about RLS say in the theatre or watching tv will set it off. Today I read a couple of posts on Face Book saying the same thing. Look forward to comments.

Is thinking about RLS raising your stress/anxiety levels?

I totally experienced this with RLS. It only happened when I was tired or bored, and never usually in the mornings, but yes, thinking about it was definitely a trigger. What’s been interesting is that, since I’ve been taking Buprenorphine (0.2mg sublingual tablet daily), I can think about RLS all I want and it still doesn’t start. It’s a complete mystery!

In my experience, that fleeting thought of RLS is actually the brain signaling that RLS is about to begin. For me it’s the first stage of RLS — so it’s an effect not a cause.

Ditto, with me.

That’s very interesting. Hadn’t thought of it like that. All I know is that I no longer have to think about it. The Buprenorphine, at a minute dose of 0.2mg daily, has been life changing.

I noticed that too, but I can't be sure if there is the most minor tremor that puts the thought in my head or the other way round.

Yes, I can be sitting happily waiting for a concert or movie to start - perfectly comfortable, no rls - but as soon as I think 'Oh this is nice, no rls' the rls starts up!

I totally agree with Wairahi. I have noticed the same thing, but I think the very first symptom is a heightened awareness of your legs. Hence, you are suddenly aware.

Some people are assuming that thinking about it is bringing on the symptoms. I see it that the symptoms are starting and so you become aware.

I feel that thinking about RLS is most likely due to the likelihood of it just starting to begin. I have noticed that thinking about it is accompanied by a slight feeling of general restlessness, prior to my legs jerking and compulsion to move around.

YES! I've noticed that for years! After weaning off Ropinerole and Gabapentin last year, my daytime symptoms have greatly improved, so even thinking about RLS doesn't set it off. But now my nights are horrible, and 4 hours of sleep is a very good night....but it's not : (
