amlodipine

I am just out of hospital having suffered an atypical heart attack (no pain) and have been put on Losartan to lower blood pressure. Unfortunately it is dropping diastolic pressure to much. Doctor wanted to try a ca channel blocker and I think I read on this site that some people were able to take amlodipine without affecting RLS.

Can anyone confirm this or suggest alternative. Thank you

I take Amlodipine 5mg without any bad effects.

However, I'm also on opioids h 25mg pd., which may mask any effects??

Good luck.

Thanks Madlegs. I have settled a bit better on Losartan at present so no change in the meantime but I shall keep amlodipine in mind. Good Wishes and sorry for delay in replying - not just up to scratch yet.

It bothers some people but not all. Some medicines that are safe for high blood pressure are propranolol (Inderal, Hemangeol, InnoPran) a beta blocker that may help RLS, Isosorbide Mononitrate (Monoket, Imdur) which is not a beta blocker nor calcium channel blocker. Other possibilities are: Clonidine (Catapres) an Alpha-2-Agonist used to treat high blood pressure which may help RLS and which also treats insomnia, tenex (Guanfacine, Intuniv), prazosin (Minipress) an alpha-adrenergic blocker that is also useful in managing sleep-related problems caused by PTSD and Tadalafil a vasodilator that in one study completely eliminated RLS. Clonidine can actually help RLS. Discuss these with your doctor.

Shame losartan doesn't work for you: what dose were you on? I started on 25mg which I found wasn't enough and moved on to 50mg. Neither gave me any problems of any kind.

Hi ChrisColumbus - I was started on 50 mg daily and think it might have been better to start at 25 as I seem to be very sensitive to all types of medication. However, things seem to be settling down a bit now and I am continuing with 50 mg. daily at present. Good Wishes

Glad it's settled! I was on 25mg for many weeks before my doctor agreed to try 50mg which works well. In the UK 25mg is the usual starting dose for 76+, 50mg under that, but I was only just 68 at the time: docs obviously thought I looked old and weak! (Well, I guess that I felt that way until I got myself off atorvastatin!!)

I take Amlodipine, lowest dose I am sure. No affect on my RLS. I have been taking it for years. One drug you may want to talk to your Doctor about is Dipyridamole.

Hi WideBody. Good to know you can take amlodipi9ne without RLS being affected. I have been settling better on Losartan so I am continuing on this in the meantime. Dipyridamole is a non-started for me as I already take a blood thinner to do with my blood cancer diagnosis. Thanks for your reply and Good Wishes
