can RLS also give daytime leg tingling in one leg?

Any explanation why my RLS symptoms have worsened so much, so suddenly?

Still waiting for blood results fromGP

What is your medication history?

Dires in reply to Madlegs1

No medication for RLS at the moment. Still going through the diagnostic stage i.e. waiting for results of fasting bloods. I do take Omeprazole which I’m trying to wean off.

I’ve had RLS on and off, for very short periods, for a few years but this has very suddenly worsened to the extent of nightly symptoms and daytime tingling for the past 3 weeks with no let up!

Omeprazole will set off RLS.

I also take Omeprazole is there something else that can be taken

I don't know of anything off hand. But maybe Sue can suggest an alternative.

Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor. It can interfere with the absorption of iron but for most people it does not bother than RLS although several people on the forum have said it does. Gaviscon Extra Strength Tablets and Liquids are safe for RLS. If you take gabapentin, don't take antacids within 2 hours.

My bad. You should not stop omeprazole and take nothing as you will get rebound symptoms. Instead switch directly to gavison as Colobay did.

I immediately stopped omeprazole and asked for gaviscon not as good but has made a difference.

Progress?😝

Well done for researching and making changes.

All the best.

Did the omeprazole make your RLS worse and did it get better when you switched to gaviscon?

Cobobay profile image
Cobobay in reply to SueJohnson

Hi Sue, not surenifnit did as been on it for a good few years, but it does seem less severe since I've been non gaviscon altho find they don't work at times. I want to come of atorvastatin but my doctor doesn't know what to replace with also want to know if my inhalers irritate it like symbicort, salbutamol and tiotropium bromide 18mg, as i wanted to know what they could be replaced with, if they do, again spoke to doctor yesterday (not my usual one) and she looked at me with a blanket expression likening was mad 😠

SueJohnson in reply to Cobobay

Your inhalers are fine. Nustendi is a cholesterol lowering drug that is not a statin, but I don’t know if it exacerbates RLS symptoms. Ezetimibe (Zetia) - reduces cholesterol although It doesn't reduce cholesterol as fast as the statins, but according to Chris Columbus it didn't trigger his RLS although the FDA does show it increases RLS for some people and then there is Triglide which seems safe. You might want to discuss these with your doctor. A more difficult way to reduce cholesterol is to go vegan. My husband lowered his cholesterol from 221 to 131 this way.

Thank you they also use for my water retention too so that's why she doesn't wany to change them, I swell quite badly round my ankles and lower legs

SueJohnson profile image
SueJohnson in reply to Cobobay

Are you saying atorvastatin is being used to reduce swelling? Because it causes swollen feet and ankles.

Cobobay profile image
Cobobay in reply to SueJohnson

Sorry Sue meant bendroflumethiazide I think 🤔

SueJohnson profile image
SueJohnson in reply to Cobobay

Unfortunately all diuretics make RLS worse and there are no safe substitutes but if you can get off atorvastatin the problem with the swelling should hopefully go away.

Yes daytime leg tingling can be a symptom of RLS.

Cobobay profile image

I get it in my right leg worse than my left and it always starts with the right too.

Yes I get this too. Sometimes it develops into jerking and the only relief is to get and move around. I get it in the arms as well. I'm now off all dopamine agonists and on pregabalin and tramadol/Temgesic.It may be there's something in your diet that's triggered it?

Yes I get jerking too especially in the right one.

Hi, I worked in a dispensary for 20 years and Omeprazole belongs to a group of medications called protein pump inhibitors, which basically means it reduces the amount of acid the stomach produces, this interferes with iron absorption which is most likely the cause of your rls, are you on omeprazole to protect your stomach from other medication or for acid reflux? If for acid reflux have a chat with your doctor about an alternative or you can take the medication at night instead of the morning, that way it may not interfere with the absorption of iron from food you consume during the day, but always check with your doctor first, I hope this helps.

Dires in reply to Loopylegs

I’m thinking about that I may need iron as Ferritin is 50. ( waiting for advice from Sue).

I think iron needs to be taken at night so I don’t think taking Omeprazole at night is an option. I would like to come off it but not sure how. And is the iron likely to upset my stomach ?

Loopylegs profile image
Loopylegs in reply to Dires

I found most iron supplements caused upset stomach or constipation with me except iron biglycinate, solgar have one called gentle iron which I find great.

SueJohnson profile image
SueJohnson in reply to Dires

Since Omeprazole is just an antacid, you could just stop it. Gaviscon Extra Strength Tablets and Liquids are safe for RLS.

SueJohnson profile image
SueJohnson in reply to SueJohnson

But if you don't take gaviscon, don't just stop it as you need to wean off it.

Cobobay profile image
Cobobay in reply to Dires

I take 2 iron tablets at night and it hasn't made my reflux any worse, I also take gaviscon now, Instead of omeprazole, which has helped

in reply to Cobobay

How has your RLS been now that you are off sertraline and it sounds like Gabapentin as well?

Cobobay profile image
Cobobay in reply to

I'm they are better but stopped gabapentin after 10 days as my legs swelled up and I had weight gain which made my depression worse. I am continuing with rolinerole but have cut down on the amount I take some days can go without during day after stopping with Doctors permission certain meds, but nighttime can still drive me mad, some nights are worse than others but I am getting 8 hours 4 out of 7 nights.

in reply to Cobobay

Congrats on lowering the dosage of the DAs. Take it slow, that’s what I would do.

The good news is, the sertraline that you were taking (as painful as it was at the time) did NO harm to your dopamine receptors which are smaller and fewer in us with RLS and essentially the cause of RLS, along with a lack of brain iron. Iron in the brain is the grease and the glue that keeps people’s dopamine receptors chugging along. So not only do we have a pathetic dopamine transport system we’re short on juice. Anyways, I truly believe the sertraline, which is a dopamine ANTAGONIST, acted as a counterweight to the DA you were taking and hence your already pathetic receptors were not down-regulated as much as someone who wasn’t taking such a drug. Does that make sense?

Depending on how adventurous you are, you can try a natural dopamine antagonist such as berberine. 500mg in the morning. If taken much later in the day it stands the chance of making your symptoms of RLS worse. Supposedly severe calorie restriction will up-regulate people’s dopamine receptors. A lot of people on here have gotten improvement from their RLS symptoms by stopping eating around 7pm and fasting until the morning. If I have so much as a crumb after midnight I will have all-out RLS for a good 20 to 30 minutes. One of these days maybe I’ll figure out why.

My RLS is completely controlled by taking 1 or 2 capsules of ferrous bisglycinate nightly. We get RLS mainly at night because our serum iron (not ferritin) plummets at night with a nadir of midnight. I believe our ferritin levels have very little, if anything, to do with our RLS symptoms. It’s only by sneaking our brains some highly bioavailable iron at night do we get relief…at least some of us. Are you taking HRT? That too can make symptoms worse, as well as calcium channel blockers, and possibly statins.

If you put berberine into the above search box you will see a few posts on it. In a perfect world the berberine would act as a counterweight to the DAs you take and make it easier to lower the dosage.

I am back on my ropinerole during day again but hopefully it will maybe not be needed again soon as this is what seems to happen, I am taking atorvastatin and won't to come off them desperately. I lost weight with food poisoning in Jamaica which I suffered with for around 3 weeks and yes my rls was better, perhapsnits because I'm back to eating I'm having to take my daily ones again now. I am fi ding it extremely hard with depression and anxiety atm without the 150mg sertraline but I'm persevering at what is a very difficult time atm. I also take 3 lots of inhalers and wandering those aggrevate the rls also doctor doesn't seem to know.

SueJohnson profile image
SueJohnson in reply to

Can you give me the source for the sertraline is a dopamine antagonist as I sure can't find it.

in reply to SueJohnson

Hi Sue, we’ve been thru this. SSRIs/serotonin antagonize/inhibit dopamine. IN THE LONG PAINFUL run, this is probably a good thing for us with RLS. As a matter of fact, a somewhat natural, short-acting dopamine antagonist (like berberine) taken in the morning might be the answer to some of our prayers. No pain, no gain. While dopamine agonists lessen the symptoms of RLS they simultaneously down-regulate our already pathetic D2 receptors. On the other hand, dopamine antagonists, like sertraline, will increase the symptoms of RLS, but likely, simultaneously up-regulate our pathetic D2 receptors. ajp.psychiatryonline.org/do....

Kaarina, if you’re reading this, it might be a good idea to post this somewhere prominent. Everyone who comes on here needs to understand the pathology that RLS is…small and few D2 receptors as compared to normal and most likely since birth. The Regulars on here keep telling members that RLS is different in everyone. That is simply not true. Is Type 1 diabetes different in everyone? To a certain extent I guess, but there’s a very definitive pathology there. To say RLS is different in everyone is to throw it in the IBS bucket. Doing this only confuses people and stops us from moving forward in a coherent logical way. Scientists have seen, touched and felt these pathetic D2 receptors, as well as a lack of brain iron, and an excess of dopamine. To my knowledge, they have not seen and touched a similar hallmark in the bowels of IBS patients.

Yes, thats what Sue told me about the Iron take at same time every night I am using gaviscon instead now.

All the PPIs such as Omeprazole inhibit mineral absorption so affect RLS especially long term. They didn't affect my RLS short term ( months).I took iron supplements alongside them. H2 blockers such as Cimetidine are not as potent as PPIs although they do block minerals too .So may be worth a shot. Gaviscon Advance doesn't affect RLS.

Oh me oh my - the tangled web of RLS! There has been a link between SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) and RLS.

sciencedaily.com/releases/2...

An additional link is the connection of SIBO with GERD and other conditions that are frequently prescribed PPI medications. As noted above they can inhibit absorption of iron and other minerals. I had GERD so bad that my teeth hurt. I have found - without testing for SIBO - to do the herbal protocol, then to increase stomach acid with HCL supplements. (I know it's counter intuitive!). GERD, acid reflux and the associated GI conditions are the biggest disconnect between holistic medicine and traditional medicine.

"The key to solving this problem isn’t taking an acid blocker, which can cause all sorts of problems. It may give you symptomatic relief, but there are problems with these drugs. They may cause an increase in pneumonia, in bloating, in overgrowth of bad bugs in your gut. They might also prevent mineral absorption."

I noticed my tingling during the day gets so much worse if I have alcohol or sugar and that means anything that might contain sugar, or anything with caffeine, and will be really bad for days on end, until I'm a good girl and remember to abstain from everything enjoyable to the palate!
