Bioavailable forms of magnesium (e.g. glycinate or citrate) can help ameliorate RLS symptoms. The same has been said of vitamin D, particularly D3.
You are more likely to find magnesium citrate over the counter in the UK: it can have a laxative effect depending on the individual and the dosage. But it certainly helped stop my RLS symptoms.
If you can find mg glycinate it doesn't have that laxative effect and is said to aid sleep.
Forms such as mg oxide are not readily absorbed and are pretty much ONLY worth taking as a laxative.
Some find applying magnesium oil or bathing with Epsom salts helps: didn't do anything for me.
If you have kidney problems consult a doctor before embarking on magnesium supplementation.
I haven't been back through your Posts - apart from noting previous discussion of propranolol - but assume that the whole subject of serum ferritin levels and Iron has been well covered?
If you are also supplementing with iron or taking some other meds e.g. gabapentin note that magnesium can hinder absorption and should therefore be taken 2-3 hours separately.
Hi Chris
Can you remind me how much magnesium you take and when. I have just started taking magnesium glycinate 1000mg daily (ie 200mg elemental magnesium) in the morning, then 56mg iron plus vitamin C mid afternoon, then 300mg Pregabalin and 0.125mg Ropirinole just before bed.
RLS is still present but nowhere near as bad as it used to be. I think I am looking for the perfect combination of medication (sad smile) (or, in other words, a miracle).
With thanks, Sally
I initially took 600mg of Mg citrate spread throughout the day (I've never been taking anything that I had to juggle the timing against magnesium) and this improved my RLS within days. However, I found a range of things that would breakthrough and still trigger RLS: statins, too much sugar, artificial sweeteners particularly aspartame, too much caffeine.... Once I stopped the statins and cut back on the other things I was able to reduce the magnesium and now only take 200mg each morning.
I have no RLS symptoms now as long as I'm careful - Christmas gluttony still caught up with me!
Thanks Chris ... is that 200mg elemental magnesium or 200mg magnesium glycinate?
I do every day and I take a blood thinner. No problems. The Mg and D are essential for so many things. I also was on a beta blocker. So no worries.
