Info learnt from Prof Walker about augmentation and effectiveness of treatment

Here is some info I learnt from Prof Walker in London which I thought was interesting & may not be widely known - and sorry if it is.

Augmentation is more likely to occur if you have low iron stores ( ferritin ) so avoid DA’s till low iron is treated.

If low iron stores other treatment of any sort is less likely to work.

2 low dose treatments together is more likely to work than increasing dose of 1 partially working ( keep DA to low dose anyway to avoid augmentation.)

2 other things I now remember too.

The coffee story. Some of us, like me, find coffee helps to shorten an episode of RLS while it’s occurring. ……Answer . Yes but, coffee is still more likely to increase the chances of you having episodes of RLS so not worth using coffee to help short term .

Because poor sleep worsens RLS, if you find a treatment which helps RLS & so improves sleep many find they then can reduce doses of what you’re taking ie not necessarily on same dose forever

Thanks for sharing. Prof. Walker is clearly up to date on the Mayo algorithm.Dr. Buchfuhrer (USA) has always stated that 2 meds at lower doses often work better than 1 med at a higher dose.

The brain iron link and the increased risk of augmentation has been known by the US experts for years and it's good to see the knowledge is trickling over here at last.
