I can't say specifically about that particular combination, but most "- prazoles" actually set off RLS.

I'm surprised the magnesiums don't help calm your stomach issues.

There is a lot more going on here than it seems.

Can you tell us all the medications you are on.

Have you had your ferritin checked,? Keeping an intake diary, etc?

Good luck.

Ferritin checked 21, normal 22 to 220, haemoglobin normal. iron normal levels, advice please?

Ferritin is way too low. If you can raise it by supplentation, then try that.

Otherwise infusion may be necessary. However, high ferritin is no guarantee of relieving RLS. Only helps about half of patients.

Do check for all other triggers first.

Yes I have started 36 mg ferrous glycinate and no side effects plus l glutamine to heal my stomach lining. I shall check levels in a month and if no improvement I shall consider the fusion.is there also a balancing act between ferritin and heamagloblin ie. Can infusion or supplements push heamagloblin above normal range?thanks again for all your advice

I'm sorry-- I really don't know enough to be able to answer .You could ask at the Iron Disorders Institute. They have an email question and answer forum. Some extremely knowledgeable people there.

I'll try to put up the email or website.

Good luck.

Yes - tell us more as Madlegs1 suggested. Are you taking any medicines for your RLS? Is your RLS under control?

Mel6666 in reply to SueJohnson

Omeprazole 20mg plus aspirin 81 mg for stent.heliobacter weakened my stomach lining.i had endoscopy diagnosis. erosion of the stomach lining caused by Helio b. I have stopped the magnesium and upped the Omeprazole to 40mg . I have no symptom's now. I have just ordered magnesium chloride flakes.im not risking my stomach lining as I bleed if I miss the Omeprazole and take the aspirin alone.im not on rls treatment. The magnesium must have aggravated the stomach lining ? No I haven't had ferritin checked. Thanks

You don't say whether your RLS is under control. Is it?

Mel6666 profile image
Mel6666 in reply to SueJohnson

No it's not.i was hoping magnesium would help it. I'm also starting acidophilus tomorrow for constipation and bloating.

hi Mel, like the others have said do get your Ferritin checked. With your story of your stomach lining & bleeding there is a fairly high chance you could be short of iron - if not anaemic then at least short of iron stores. Lots of posts on here about advised levels etc.

It sounds like you won’t be able to stop your Omeprazole which could be making your RLS worse so I suspect you’ll need something more than Magnesium to settle your RLS - don’t let your Drs put you on a dopamine agonist (lots of posts on here as to why)- though if your iron stores are low fixing that might fix it.

It sounds as if you are in one of these tricky vicious circles - what a pain for you

Thanks yes I shall check my ferritin.

To get your ferritin tested when you see your doctor ask for a full iron panel. Fast after midnight. Have your test in the morning. When you get the results, ask for your ferritin and transferrin saturation (TSAT) numbers. You want your ferritin to be over 100 as improving it to that helps 60% of people with RLS and in some cases completely eliminates their RLS and you want your transferrin saturation to be between 20 and 45. If your ferritin is less than 100 or your transferrin saturation is not between 20 and 45 post back here and we can give you some advice. Above all don't let your doctor prescribe a dopamine agonist like ropinirole (requip) or pramipexole (mirapex). They used to be the first line treatment for RLS, but no longer are because of the danger of augmentation. Instead ask your doctor to prescribe gabapentin or pregabalin. Beginning dose is usually 300 mg gabapentin (75 mg pregabalin). It will take 3 weeks before it is fully effective. After that increase it by 100 mg (25 mg pregabalin) every couple of days until you find the dose that works for you. Take it 1 to 2 hours before bedtime. If you need more than 600 mg take the extra 4 hours before bedtime as it is not as well absorbed above 600 mg. If you need more than 1200 mg, take the extra 6 hours before bedtime. (You don't need to split the doses with pregabalin) Most of the side effects of gabapentin and pregabalin will disappear after a few weeks and the few that don't will usually lessen. Those that remain are usually worth it for the elimination of the RLS symptoms. According to the Mayo Clinic Updated Algorithm on RLS: "Most RLS patients require 1200 to 1800 mg of gabapentin (200 to 300 mg pregabalin) daily." If you take magnesium don't take it within 3 hours of taking gabapentin as it will interfere with the absorption of the gabapentin. Check out the Mayo Clinic Updated Algorithm on RLS which will tell you everything you want to know including about its treatment and refer your doctor to it if needed as many doctors do not know much about RLS or are not uptodate on it at Https://mayoclinicproceedings.org/a...

Some things that can make RLS symptoms worse for some people are alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, sugar, carbs, foods high in sodium, foods that cause inflammation, ice cream, estrogen, dehydration, MSG, collagen supplements, electrolyte imbalance, melatonin, stress and vigorous exercise. Some things that help some people include caffeine, moderate exercise, weighted blankets, compression socks, elastic bandages, masturbation, magnesium glycinate, low oxalate diet, selenium, 5 minute shower alternating 20 seconds cold water with 10 seconds hot water finishing with hot water for another couple of minutes, hot baths, distractions, applying a topical magnesium lotion or spray, doing a magnesium salts soak, vitamins B1, B3, B6, B12, D3, K2, if deficient, and potassium and copper if deficient, massage including using a massage gun, using a standing desk, listening to music and yoga.

You take aspirin due to the stent but I'd ask your doctor if there's any alternative to this. My stomach has never been able to tolerate it (or any anti inflammatory for that matter).

Hi,I take Omeprazole and it doesn't affect my RLS.It does inhibit mineral absorption so you definitely need to monitor your iron levels. I take Omeprazole in the morning and iron and magnesium at night.

Did two different doctors prescribe aspirin and omeprazole? Usually a person would be told to avoid aspirin if there is stomach irritation.

Mel6666 profile image
Mel6666 in reply to grassgree

Yes I will do the tests.my docs no about aspirin . There is no alternative that I know of that is easy on the stomach lining. It's ok once I take with Omeprazole.
