IBS problem - urge to go quickly and anxiety

Hi,

This is very frustrating. I am not on medication, apart from iron, vitamin C and magnesium.

For some reason I get the urge to have to go quickly and when least convenient. It's so frustrating having to plan toilets on my trip. Getting very anxious!!!

Anyone else has this? How do I help myself. By the way it's worse when my RLS is worse:(

Did this start when you started iron or magnesium? If not was anything else changed in your diet when it started?

Thanks for your message, Sue! No, remember having this as a child together with growing pains. Getting worse with RLS and gone with dopamine agonists, which I stopped taking. Brrrr...! :( Will try to eliminate milk maybe.

Moonwalker - have you been taking the magnesium for long. Magnesium can have this effect. Just a thought. Perhaps you could try cutting down the dosage or stopping for a few days to see the effect of this.

Thanks, definitely worth a try.

Hi Moonwalker, you can try taking Berberine in the morning. It’s a “cure-all.” Everything from toenail fungus to IBS-D to cholesterol, blood sugar and even normalize our dopamine receptors…thus possibly triggering a short-lived attack. It worked for my cousin who has IBS-D. Read about it! Good luck.

Thanks will check with my GP if he will prescribe.

Berberine is over the counter. An herb.

Oh, even better. Where is it cheapest and what amount should I take plus when?

Solaray Berberine 250mg, twice daily - I get everything here (USA) but I'm sure it's on Amazon in other countries.

Dic, what do you take Berberine for?

Should absolutely do the trick. Were you tested for SIBO? Do you have the hydrogen producing critters or the methane ones?

Never got tested. I just assumed I had it, with GERD symptoms so bad, my teeth hurt.

in reply toDicCarlson

Is it working?

Mostly yes, but the "SIBO therapy" is 4 weeks on, 2 weeks off. It seems like there is always a relapse. Interesting supplement also is Atrantil for digestive issues...

Both conditions (RLS and IBS) can be affected by stress. Iron and magnesium can be a problem for some people. Did you talk to a doctor about it? While you're waiting, try eliminating dairy products, fiber and/or gluten. Google IBS and read a list of foods to avoid. The problem is that just about all foods will be on somebody's list, and you have to experiment. But the good news is that IBS is controllable. RLS, not so much.

Eat only Whole Foods eg ..Foods that have one ingredient .. ie meat, broccoli, apple , water .

If that doesn’t work google the carnivore diet and ibs .

The type of Magnesium you take may be the culprit. Try this:

“Magnesium glycinate is a form of magnesium that is bound to a protein, causing increased absorption. Magnesium glycinate is thought to be least likely to cause diarrhea.”

Hi Moonwalker, Ideally you should be referred to a gastroenterologist and have a colonoscopy. Stressing about it, will not help at all but of course one can fully understand why as it impacts greatly on getting on with one's life. You mention you have been diagnosed with IBS. There are many foods to avoid or substantially reduce. which unfortunately can make eating incredibly boring. You could start keeping a food diary to see if you can see what food/drinks may affect you more

Hi Kaarina, thanks for your message. It's tricky in the UK. The IBS I have diagnosed myself, with Google. I am still waiting to see a neurologist let alone seeing another specialist. I have stopped using cows milk and it's a little better. Food diary is a great Idea. Unfortunately I don't eat meat, so there is not a lot of food left for me. I am keen on chamomile tea in the evening and hope it will help my rls plus IBS. Not easy trying to get this problem sorted. Working from home helps a lot, too!

There are so many things that your symptoms could be. Will you consider seeing a doctor? The regular doc (primary care provider in the US) should be able to help. And if he or she wants you to see a specialist, you can decide that after hearing what the PCP says.

Will phone my GP as I live in the United Kingdom. See what he recommends. Thanks for your response.

I am relieved to hear that you will discuss this with your GP.

Moonwalker1967, your RLS and IBS may benefit from activated vitamin B1 (thiamine) and activated vitamin D together with the other B vitamins. Magnesium is needed to activate B1 & D and it too is often at a low level. Be aware of anti thiamine factors from foods and medications in addition to prolonged cooking diminishing or destroys thiamine. Investigate fat soluble thiamines as the eonutrition link mentions one and also investigate high dose thiamine as it may be required to overcome a long standing deficiency. The researchgate link brings out a possible sibo-RLS connection. Always consult your health care professional before using any supplement.
