Does anyone have any advice on dealing with RLS during the day?

I take 300mg of Pregabalin at night, which helps at night (normally).

Recently, the RLS is coming back very badly around lunchtime, and lasts all afternoon, every day, without respite. As you can imagine, it is affecting me pretty badly in all kinds of ways. My SOH just about remains, but every day now, it is so awful that you wonder if it’s all worthwhile .,…,

I’m also taking Ferrous Sulphate every other day to try to raise my iron levels, which is happening, albeit slowly.

Weirdly, the RLS has got worse since I’ve been taking it.

I’ve also been on Omeprazole for donkeys’ years and really can’t stop taking it because I had duodenitis badly years ago and still get acid indigestion sometimes, even with Omeprazole, so can’t see how I can stop taking it.

Sorry this all sounds doom and gloom, but you all understand how utterly vile and debilitating this is and are so helpful. Other people are sweet, but I think they just think it’s trivial - and it soooooo isn’t.

Any advice gratefully received. Thank you so much and best wishes to you all.

I'm sure we've told you this before that Omeprazole can make RLS worse for some. A safe substitute is Gaviscon Extra Strength Tablets and Liquids. Discuss this with your doctor. Have you started any other medicines or even any OTC supplements lately? Have you changed anything you eat or made any life style changes like increasing your exercise? Otherwise you could try taking pregabalin an hour before your daytime symptoms start and see if that helps.

Thank you Sue and others. I have been taking Omeprazole for the past 20 years and it’s only recently that the RLS is becoming intolerable.

I’ll talk to the doctor and ask about alternatives and get some Gaviscon. Nothing else has changed except MS is making my mobility a bit of a issue, so could be that.

I’m beginning to lose weight and eat more sensibly, so hope springs eternal. At least, I hope it does ……. thank you x

I take 1-2 Temgesic early afternoon if my legs kick off. Afternoon sleepiness is already a problem for me because of other meds.

I take 300mg pregabalin plus 2 30mg codeine phosphate at night and 1 150mg pregabalin plus 1 30mg codeine phosphate when I get in from work around 14.30 which helps with my day RLS wouldn't say they help with sleep as survive on 3 hours broken sleep pre night don't drive for work for obvious reasons ( knackered) work for royalmail and walk anywhere from 12 to 15 miles a day so excercise isn't the answer for me ! Hope these med combination might be of any good to your GP who in the UK are useless when it comes to RLS maybe a bit strong so unknowledgable might be better !

If the RLS comes on around half an hour after a meal then the cause is probably something you ate at that meal or something which pushed you over the threshold to trigger RLS as the effects are cumulative, i.e. something that you ate or drank at breakfast could be partly the cause and something you ate at lunch tipped you over the threshold. Most likely candidates are sugary drinks like fruit juice, toast and jam, a mid morning biscuit, a can of fizzy drink with your lunch, etc. though it could be anything that causes inflammation in the body.
