HI does Omeprazole trigger RLS ? Taken one tonight and legs going nuts ? Thankyou

Hi pippins 2 have been on omeprazole for many years hiatus hernia now take morning and night it has never affected my legs but we are all different
yes! I had to stop it immediately.
Most of those PPIs set off RLS.
It interferes with the absorption of iron but shouldn't cause your RLS to get worse, however everybody is different and it obviously is makin yours worse.
Hi Pipps, the US foundation mentions that most PPI gastric meds trigger RLS. It seems to be the case for you.
I take omeprazole without a detrimental RLS result. But mentioning that I should add that I take Nortriptylene without adversely affecting my legs. We are all different!
i'm another that can't take it. I learned that the hard way.
In theory it shouldn't. It doesn't for me. It does interfer with iron absorption. But listen to your body.It may not suit you.Try an H2
blocker like Cimitedine. Good luck.
it does for me after a few days. I take esomeprazole and it appears ok but I also take iron (not at the same time) although I don’t take the ppi for longer than 2 weeks at a time. All the other ppi’s send my legs nuts. We are all different
One of the side effect of Omeprazole is inflammation and as I believe that one of the main causes of RLS is systemic inflammation I wouldn't be at all surprised if your RLS got worse on omeprazole. You could eliminate your need for Omeprazole and eliminate your RLS by changing your diet and eliminating processed foods like bread and other wheat based products, refined sugars and starches and cutting down the use of refined seed oils.
Hi Pippins,
I took lanzoprazole last night (which is another PPI) and my legs and arms went absolutely crazy. Didn’t get any sleep at all. Think I’d rather have the gastritis!
I’m never taking it ever again. I’m also going to avoid food tonight .
So your not alone in your RLS going off the scale with a PPI .
Let’s hope for a better night tonight!
Lola xx
Hi Lola, you might want to try taking zinc carnosine for heartburn and Gastritis. Nothing short of a miracle for Gastritis. It’s by prescription in Japan. I take it the second I feel a tiny bit of heartburn. PPIs didn’t make my RLS worse as I recall, but it did give me pretty bad, all day, migraines. Took a while for me to make the connection.
Reflux is tough to control because in most cases it’s caused by a hiatal hernia which means that sphincter muscle which closes off the stomach and stops the acid from backing up into the esophagus isn’t working right. The stomach is literally bulging into the esophagus. So yes, good idea not to eat at night. For several weeks now I’ve been using a sleep wedge and love it. Also, sleeping on your left side should help greatly with reflux.
Never take any zinc product (not even cold-eez) on an empty stomach. It will give you mild nausea until you eat something. Also if you take more than 30 mg of zinc a day you should supplement with one or two milligrams of copper. They balance each other out. Zinc is considered a calming mineral while copper is more excitatory. We need both and want them in balance to feel great.
thanks for this 😊. I’m going to order some zinc and copper! Lola x
Zinc is great by itself but I believe for Gastritis zinc carnosine is best. It should also be a bioavailable form of copper. Let me find a link for the zinc carnosine. Sadly it is my most expensive supplement.
Here is a link for it. With the 15% off code and free shipping for orders over $20 it is the cheapest I could find on the internet for the US: pureformulas.com/natures-li...
thank you so much! Hopefully they will ship to UK - I will have a look . 😊

Hi Pippins2. I was interested to read that you thought Omeprazole triggered your RLS, as I take 20mg of Omeprazole every morning for Reflux and my GP, although it’s very hard to see the same one twice, didn’t mention a possible link as a RLS trigger but it affects you and several others who have replied to you also noted a link.
Maybe I’ll stop taking it and see what happens, well Reflux will return yes, but can monitor RLS. Thank You Pippins2 for asking the question
Gaviscon is a safe antacid.
After taking Omeprazole I spent an entire night walking up and down the stairs, taking baths and walking from room to room. Never again!
Thankyou everyone for your replies I am no longer taking it x
