Is Magnesium glycinate available in smaller caps/tabs?

I bought a bottle called "doctor's best high absorption magnesium 100% chelated" 100mg tablets (ingredient says from magnesium lysinate glycinate chelate) to help with sleep, but the tablets r too huge for me to swallow, n when I tried to crush them n mix with water, the taste was so horrible I vomited. I already feel awful due to the extremely prolonged sleep deprivation so I just can't take them though I tried many times.

Is it there any other brand of magnesium glycinate available that has smaller capsules or tablets?

Or is there another form of magnesium that can work that doesn't taste so bad? I already hv a problem swallowing capsules n tablets n usually crush or open up the ones which can be done so.

Since last year, I was taking Magnesium L-threonate (magmind by jarrow) but since last many months, it doesn't work anymore for sleep or rls. That's why I want to try another form. (I had read that Magnesium glycinate helps sleep, so that's why I had wanted to try it.)

Hello again.

Firstly it would be a good idea if you confirm you have RLS. You can do this by comparing your symptoms to the accepted diagnostic criteria,

See this link

irlssg.org/diagnostic-criteria

If your symptoms match ALL the first four criteria, you possiblyhave RLS. If so, seeing a doctor will help confirm the fifth.

If your symptoms don't match even one criteria then you possibly don't have RLS.

Quite a few people claim that various non-medical remedies help with RLS. However, although one person might find a particular remedy helpful, it doesn't mean another will.

Magnesium is quite popular and a few people mention various amino acids and neurotransmitter precursors.

Whether these work for you will be a matter of trial and error. Reading otber posts on here, there seems to be more error than anything. Trying one thing after another could be both frustrating and expensive.

There is no accepted medical evidence that any food supplement helps with RLS.

One big exception is iron.

Vitamin B12 and especially vitamin D have been shown to be beneficial, IF there is a deficiency.

Other non-medical remedies include such things as Kratom and cannabis. Unfortunately these are both quite unreliable.

Medical cannabis is more likely to be helpful used in conjunction with other remedies.

If you do have RLS and it's severe, I suggest your best option is to seek medical help. Medical treatments, although not perfect are more reliable and known to be effective.

Please read this link to see what the recommendations are for the medical treatment of RLS.

In your case perhaps your priority is to get treatment for your obstructive sleep apnoea.

Hi elffindoe.

First I just want to say that I appreciate and value all your replies so much. I cudnt reply to your earlier responses to my posts because I m so severely unwell due to sleep deprivation that I don't hv strength (neither physical or mental) at all now n just trying to focus my energy into finding something to help me sleep first, only then I can do anything else or recover. I can't even think properly or talk to more doctors. But just know I am always thankful for your responses which r so invaluable, analytical, comprehensive, points organized so well.

Yes I do hv RLS n my symptoms match all the criteria. RLS started last year but I never posted back then as I was a silent member n read about iron which I tried n it worked to relieve symptoms. But I never had insomnia last year at all...I only had rls last year n I cud sleep after taking iron after rls was controlled. However, this year in February, one day I became severely ill and suddenly overnight from that day onwards itself only, this severe insomnia suddenly started. Then after couple months of trying different meds for sleep, rls reappeared very very severely after I started mirtazipine (for sleep) so i had to stop mirtazipine but the rls remains at moderate level. But I hv insomnia even if rls is not there during a particular night. Doctors I hv consulted so far n not knowledgeable abt rls n it seems all they hv to offer is anti depressants even for sleep, which I m not taking as I know will make it worse. I m looking for someone who can help. But right now the insomnia issue is more urgent. My body is very sensitive to meds, so wud like to try non med options first if possible. I hv not been able to actually get tested for apnea but doctors I asked so far seem to think the symptoms r not obstructive sleep apnea.

Thank u for options u listed. Taking iron n magnesium n the vitamins already....looking for availability of kratom n cannabis. Need to sleep urgently else will never recover. It's been 9 months now, I don't think I can ever recover now.

My body feels horrible inside, seems to be some other very serious underlying health problem too but tests so far haven't indicated what.

As you have apparently have severe insomnia which doesn't seem to entirely correspond to your RLS, then the insomnia may not necessarily be caused by RLS.

There are are other causes of insomnia.

I'm not making any judgements, but have you considered there may be a psychological element to your situation.

This isn't to say that you don't have RLS which has definite physical causes, but there are psychological consequences.

This can include not just sleep disturbance due to RLS symptoms, but chronic poor sleeping habits and anxiety.

RLS can also lead to people experiencing "somatisation", i.e. the experience of physical symptoms in the absence of any physical cause.

It's not unusual for doctors to advise antidepressants for anxiety and insomnia. They can help. However they're really a temporary solution and don't deal with underlying factors.

In which case you might think about seeking either a cognitive or behavioural therapy.

As regards antidepressants there are some that are safe for RLS, notably trazadone and nefazadone. These don't make RLS worse and promote sleep.

It is also important, as part of your situation, that your RLS is managed.

I may have missed it, but you don't appear to mention any medical treatment for your RLS.

I seem to recall you enquired about buprenorphine in one post. Are you taking it?

If not, then are you taking any medication for your RLS?

If RLS is severe, then my opinion is it isn't really going to be controlled unless you take appropriate medication.

My apologies if you've already tried any medication, but if you read the recommendations the first medical treatment is an alpha 2 delta ligand, either pregabalin or gabapentin.

Not ideal but they are effective for RLS and can help relieve anxiety and promote sleep.

Lastly, it may help solve the mystery of your insomnia if you look at when it started.

You write it started apparently when you suddenly became "severely ill" overnight. This is apparently a factor in your current situation, but it's difficult to judge because I have no idea what signs or symptoms you experienced.

It's also difficult to judge because I have no idea what events immediately preceded that nor what was going on in your life at that time.

I assume you sought medical help?

If so were your signs and symptoms investigated? Was there any discussion of what might be causing them either physical or psychological?

I found Magnesium Citrate tablets (readily available from health food stores and online) effective. (That's until I was put on a statin because of a mini-stroke, and it stopped working 😕).
