Seeking Holistic Remedies and Root Causes of RLS

Over the past few years, I've developed RLS and at the same time also tested positive for toxic metals like lead, mercury, aluminum and several others. Have also learned that this is an epidemic problem as these toxic metals have no biological benefit and yet are found in tap water, food, air, cosmetics, etc etc. Most people in today's world carry these. The older we get, the more they accumulate in the body. My experience is that these metals greatly aggravate my nervous system. Often I can calm or temporarily eliminate my RLS by using a mix of detox binders. These are substances like Bentonite cIay, Zeolite, modified citrus pectin and several others. Have also changed my eating habits to avoid adding to my current burden - such as reducing consumption of canned food (aluminum, tin), no longer drinking tap water (lead, arsenic), mostly eliminated seafood (mercury, cesium), switched to safe cosmetics (lead, thallium) and a hundred other lifestyle modifications. Another great therapy is coffee enemas. They will to often do the trick if the binders don't work. It sounds weird, but is an inexpensive, painless, easy time-tested way to cleanse out the lower GI tract that I learned about from holistic MD, Dr. Angelique Hart in Albuquerque, New Mexico. About 10% of the time, neither of those remedies works. As many knowledgable people have suggested, supplementing with iron often helps. Another thing to look into is KPU, a genetic condition that disrupts heme metabolism. It's common but the urine test is highly unreliable and convential doctors aren't informed. BioPure makes a supplement called CORE which addresses it. Also sleeping on a slant wedge mattress which seems to help calm down and "drain the brain." And many other tricks that could help. Understanding the utter torture of RLS, am happy to share and help and appreciate other holistic suggestions that might get to the root causes.

Thanks for sharing. I think most people on here will have tried at least one alternative remedy. Supplements, restrictive diets, gadgets etc. I know I have. I stopped using all household products and makeup that might contain anything like parabens, or toxins. Sadly made no difference but cost a fortune.Delighted you've found something that helps.

There’s a FB Group called the Root Cause Protocol. If you not seen it, I would advise you to check it out. I’ve heard some people report positive results with it. I tried it for around three months, but I modified it to make it easier to follow. It’s all about Magnesium and Iron/Mineral Balancing. The Magnesium works wonders to calm the legs, as well as sleep. Thanks for that JWBe - it makes sense to me that any lifestyle that reduced inflammation and stress will help with RLS and I personally have found that to be true. I keep to organic, lots of fresh veg, rainbow colours, hydration, exercise, use stevia as a sweetener and use a moderate amount of supplements including magnesium. I live a bearable life and get sufficient sleep with the help of medical cannabis. All in all I have had RLS for 50 years and have kept it from becoming unbearable…so at least this lifestyle is slowing it down maybe.

Thanks for this. I'm delighted when people find a non pharmacological solution to this awful affliction. Like many on here, I've tried a vast array of therapies including different diets, nutritional supplements, iron infusions, seen a number of integrative GPs and naturopaths, had all amalgams removed by a biological dentist, had gut microbiome tested, tried biofeedback, infrared sauna, hypnotherapy, EFT therapy, acupuncture and so on and on.

I do believe there's a solution out there...just not any of the above!

I am impressed with your list. I hope you find something. Have you done any genetic testing?

No, not yet. Have you?

Thank you JWBe.

What you've written is a great help, thanks again.

This is on no way intended as a criticism, but what you refer to is possibly better called alternative, non-pharmaceutical and/or herbal remedies.

However it does give me the opportunity to highlight that there does seem to be a general lack of information on the holistic management of RLS.

The proper meaning of "holistic" is something that addresses the whole person, i.e not just the physical but the emotional, psychological, social and spiritual aspects.

All these are affected by RLS but even the best RLS experts only seem to recommend physical treatments.

Tjis also seems to be often the same with alternative practitioners.
