Hi. I'm having surgery for breast cancer soon and know there are certain drugs I need to avoid because they exacerbate RLS.Is it only anti- nausea drugs I need to be aware of or is there anything else I need to avoid ? Thanks in advance. X

Anti nauseates to avoid include

ANTIVERT, Atarax, Benadryl,Bonine,Compazine, Phenergan, Reglan, Thorazine,Tigane,Trifalon.

Safe alternatives: Kytril, Vistaril & Zofran.

Mention to the anaesthetist now so they can make arrangements for your surgery.

Good luck with the surgery & ongoing treatment. My neighbour has just had successful surgery & is now starting her hormone treatment & a one off radiotherapy dose.

Great to see the NHS is still carrying out essential cancer treatment in some parts.

Jumpey, you may search HU for 'medical alert card', as there are several posts on it. The us rls.org has one, and I think also rls-uk.org. It may be easier or more acceptable to bring a printout of those to the hospital than a copy of joolsg's reply. Although the content will be the same.

Hi Jumpey

I had surgery for triple negative breast cancer last August. I was only in for the day and was back in my own bed in the evening. And no drugs needed.

Prior to surgery I had 4 months of chemo. The first 3 treatments of ENC didn’t affect my RLS but I then had 4 treatments of carboplatin and abraxane which caused peripheral neuropathy and sent my RLS through the roof. I was also on steroids, antihistamine and strong anti nausea tablets which may have contributed. I’m pleased to say that my RLS soon reverted back to pre chemo levels within a couple of weeks of my treatment finishing.

Good luck with your treatment. I hope everything goes well for you.

When I had breast cancer treatment they gave me Metoclopramide for nausea. This was absolutely awful - really aggravated my RLS. When I was put back on Ondansetron I was much better. Also Omeprazole for stomach acid made my RLS worse too so I stopped taking it. I learned that my medical team did not know anything about RLS so I had to research everything they gave me. Good luck with your surgery. Hope everything goes well. I had surgery, chemo, radiotherapy & Herceptin from 2017-2019 but I am much better now.
