Hi I’m not sure wether people still a part of this group or not but I was wondering if anyone has had RLS reaction to anti acid medication ?

Hi, some antacids are known to make RLS worse, or even actually cause it.

The main culprits are the Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) and H2 Inhibitors.

PPIs usually have a name that ends with "prazole". They work by inhibiting the secretion of acid in the stomach. As a side effect they also inhibit the absorption of iron and magnesium and the secretion of a substance called Intrinsic Factor (IF).

IF is necessary to absorb vitamin B12.

Taking a PPI can lead to iron, magnesium and B12 deficiency, all factors making RLS worse.

IF you suffer reflux there are alternatives.

Thanks for the reply ! Can you recommend an anti acid that won’t cause RLS because I took a renni before and it gave me RLS I don’t usually get RLS all the time certain medication bring it on . I have really bad reflux problems and it’s effecting my breathing so my doctor perscibed me ZOTON which is a PPI but I never took it because I was afraid I will get RLS and it’s too unbearable . So do you know it Gaviscon causes RLS or is there is an anti acid I can take that won’t cause RLS ?? Thanks so much Again for the reply ! I appreciate it so much I’m really going through a bad time I have globus because of this acid reflux and really scarey shortness of breath after eating meals .

Sorry to hear this.

The best thing to do is have a word with a pharmacist.

Rennies, theoretically should be OK, thete's no inhibitor in them as far as I know and there is magnesium which is supposed to help with RLS.

Similarly gaviscon.

It siunds like you have a hiatus hernia.

Have you seen a dietician?

3 main things you should consider

1 What you eat,

2 How much you eat.

3 Gravity.

You probably know already not to eat anything too.acid, spicy, too hot, too cold, too fatty and high fibre is best as it helps things go down.

You shouldn't eat too much all at once. Have FIVE meals a day, but SMALL ones.

Which way is up? If your stomachs nearer the same level as your mouth then gravity will cause reflux. Always stay as vertical as you can. Don't bend over, sit upright when sitting and have lots of pillows in bed, (or a wedge) so you're sleeping as upright (from the waist) as possible.

That should help with the reflux.

You're treating symptoms not the cause. I had severe GERD and I assumed it was from SIBO. I used the herbal treatment, then probiotics to improve gut function - never looked back. siboinfo.com/herbal-antibio...

A number of years ago I took a PPI and shortly thereafter started getting crazy leg jerks throughout the day. But it was also a period of intense stress, so I’m not sure in hindsight that the stress wasn’t causing both the acid and the jerks, and I just happened to be taking the PPI.
