Knee operation

I am due to go into hospital for knee replacement, but iam worried about how to cope with my RLS post op.

The thought of my leg klcking out at night fills me with fear, any help would be great.

Had both my knees replaced. I was given OxyContin after the op for pain relief, along with Paracetamol and Oramorph, but the OxyContin stopped my RLS in it’s tracks. Plus they gave a months supply to go home with. About a fortnight after finishing them the RLS came back. So I had to fight to get them prescribed on NHS. Following appointments with neurologist and sleep clinic, I was then prescribed Oxy for my RLS and pleased to say it’s still doing it’s job approximately 3 years on. Good Luck 🍀 for your op and really work hard on those exercises afterwards. X

Make sure they dont give you anti sickness meds except Zofran as they will send your RLS nuts .Tell everyone you come into contact with .I say i am allergic to them then you get a red arm band which reminds them x

I’ve just had a hernia op and was concerned so I took along my printed list from rlshelp.org and it got their attention (and a special armband!). The anaesthetist came to discuss and changed the standard meds.

Unfortunately, I was going through an amazing good period and the operation put paid to that...

As smiler says, hopefully you will be prescribed opiates for post surgical pain relief and this can control the RLS. You can discuss this with the anaesthetist. If you're having a pre-op assessment and haven't had it yet, you can highlight your RLS issue then too.

If you can get get them to continue an opiate some time after the op, great.

Be aware that if and when you stop taking an opiatr, your RLS will

get worse. This is opiate withdrawal.

I need a knee op and have often wondered about my legs jerking after the operation, in my experience your body helps when you most need it so with some luck your symptoms will not come back for a while after the operation, best of luck.
