Has anyone had success on keto diet. Since I started 3 weeks ago RLS has almost completely gone away.

Delighted it’s helped you. I followed keto for 9 months and again recently for 6 weeks. It made no difference to my RLS but it’s great for weight loss!

Sorry to burst your bubble, Keto actually slows down fat loss so you lose far less fat than you would just dieting normally. youtube.com/watch?v=MJVSD0h... What you lost was muscle & water weight.

That's good to know. I was not doing it for weight loss though as I was already slightly underweight when I started it. I had read that it was good for auto immune diseases ( I have MS). I also wanted to see if it could improve my RLS. I stopped it because I looked too thin and it wasn't helping my MS or my RLS.

Strangely, my RLS improves when I eat foods that are common triggers for others, like carbs, sugar, alcohol, ice cream etc. I think the dopamine pleasure hit must counteract everything else.

I suppose it proves that WAAD ( we are all different).

If you're the kind who will try anything to get results, Maybe a whole food plant based diet will help your MS? nakedfoodmagazine.com/plant...

You are right about the dopamine & rls, some people it's that & others it's in the gut (IBS, SIBO), there's also medication induced rls.

It's also not so entirely good from the insulin point of view either. I was reading this last night:

having followed the link from:

thepaleomom.com/start-here/...

This part particularly from the link you posted..

However, rigorous and well-controlled metabolic ward studies have confirmed that low-carb and ketogenic diets don’t turn us into “fat-burning machines” with increased energy expenditure and preferential fat mass loss. The truth might actually be the opposite. These diets help us lose weight simply by creating a dietary structure that focuses on more satiating foods so that most individuals naturally achieve a caloric deficit while following these dietary templates. While weight loss is certainly more complicated than calories in versus calories out, a caloric deficit is still a necessary condition for weight loss. When followed for long periods, ketogenic diets can tank our metabolism and have a muscle-wasting effect, making weight loss maintenance particularly challenging.

So, while insulin resistance is clearly damaging, not eating enough carbs to support healthy amounts of insulin secretion can also lead to similar health problems.

This is a really good video showing the negative impact of long term keto with Drs who have seen people in their early 40s with blocked arteries after they had heart attacks after being keto for 10 years. One Dr does say there's a healthy way to do Keto which is the Whole Plant Based way. Obviously if you're eating eggs & bacon & butter in abundance your cholesterol will go through the roof & your arteries will clog at a much faster rate than the general population.

Eating plenty of oily fish may also avoid this problem. It was observed decades ago that Eskimos, who eat a lot of both whale blubber and oily fish, have a relatively low heart disease problem. Adding lecithin and enough vitamin B and C will also help.

[I'm not (currently) diabetic and don't follow the keto diet – trying to move more towards the autoimmune protocol (AIP) which is sort of paleo-based.]

How did they determine whether they had a heart disease problem when decades ago an Eskimo would be lucky to live to 50?

I think I probably read it back in the 90s, if not the 80s, in literature supplied by a then mail order supplement supplier. Googling it does look as if it is upheld by some:

I do believe myself that oily fish does help keep the tubes clear and has other health benefits, but still wouldn't overdo the saturated fats.

I have lost 90 pounds on keto, in a healthy way over 2 years, I am happy, healthy, it is a permanent lifestyle. I have about 50 more to lose, and I feel like a million bucks! My husband has seen a dramatic change in me, mood outlook, etc.. my diabetes is completely gone. We go kayaking every week. I love eating veggies, I love healthy food,I love exercise.

It didn't help my RLS. Only the combination of 30 mg time release morphine (4 hours before bedtime) plus 1200 mg gabapentin at bedtime works for me. We tried everything else before reaching this conclusion.

Wow!! That is fantastic. I had given up hope. This feels so good and I am calmer too. What a relief to see results on the scale and feel so much better too. Congratulations 🎉👏 keep going!!

Are you sure your Diabetes is completely gone? What if you were to drink a can of coke & eat a bowl of rice & test your blood sugar then & post the results. If it's gone your body will have no issue getting those 2 things under control quickly like a person who doesn't have diabetes would.

I could fly to the moon, too. That's more likely than eating sugar and starch. Lol!

I just find it fascinating that people make all these claims about being healed when the fact is, if they were healed they'd have no problem being able to do that thing again.. If I claimed to be healed from celiac disease (because I avoid all gluten like the plague) I'd be able to pick up a nice wholemeal loaf & eat it wouldn't i? But that's not the case at all.. Neither is it the case for you. If anything you've boxed yourself into a corner. Especially when a whole food diet has a 95+ percent cure rate for type 2 diabetes. Cure.. As in you can go back to enjoying a whole range of foods again.

I doubt your diabetes is completely gone, not according to this which shows that it is actually worse.

Thanks for your feed back. Caution on Keto diet seems rational. Atkins and ideal protien diets all promised same rewards but weren't for me. I'm eating healthier on a keto plan so it has just helped me ditch the processed foods and the over eating spiral. If it also helps the RLS, then cool beans!!

Thanks joolsg!!

This site is so helpful and full of good information. I am late to the party at 61. So glad to read everyone's comments and encouragement too.

All I know is my own experience.

It's only been 3 weeks without bread or processed foods, don't feel deprived at all.

I am being careful though and not going crazy with fatty meat and butter as much as alot of eggs, vegetables and lean protien.

Making homemade food that is clean. (Organic, grass fed, pasture raised, local etc...)

I take the supplements B complex, mg, k, and omegas along with minerals and a multi.

The keto plan has given me renewed hope because I feel so much better!

Losing the inflamation was the first amazing thing and now more energy and calmer /less mood swings also sleeping better.

Before starting the diet I asked my doctor. So far he is happy I'm 10 lbs down and on no medication.

I appreciate all the testimonials and that everyone has to find their own path. And I maintain a healthy amount of skepticism.

I'll keep you posted.

I loosely follow a paleo type diet which cuts out refined carbs like sugar, fruit juices, alcohol etc, and is low in other inflammatories like refined flour, and with a bit of essential nutrition supplementation, it's eliminated my rls. Now that the nerves have had time to recover, I'm going to try stopping the supplementation.
