Sertraline and RLS is there a connection?

I have had RLS on and off for years and taking Citalopram for depression and anxiety. I started taking an iron supplement which did eradicate the RLS at one point. I have been moved over to Sertraline from Citalopram and since then my RLS has been horrendous, like many of the posters on here I've been losing hours of sleep, punching my legs and pacing, trying anything to get my legs to stop so I can sleep. My GP suggested Lofepramine instead of the sertraline as they prescribe that for RLS, it is also used to treat depression and anxiety. After trying this I was so miserable and anxious I couldn't cope so went back into sertraline. Whenever I see my GP regarding my RLS they never seem to take it seriously and don't seem to know much about the condition which is frustrating. What other medications are available to treat RLS? I want to go back to my GP about this and suggest being prescribed something to take aswell as the sertraline as I can't carry on like this, however I have no idea what to suggest. Any help is much appreciated. 😊

Check out rls-uk.org for a list of medications. You could print this out and hive to your dr.

Similar list on rlshelp.org.

Sertraline is an SSRI, and all of those are contra-indictaed in RLS.

The anti-depressants that you could take include Wellbutrin, Trazodone and Lamotrigine.

Why did you stop the citalopram ?

I had been on it for quite a few years and started having bad PMS mood swings etc. My GP suggested sertraline said it's better for that kind of thing and more of a recent antidepressant than citalopram. I have been much better in it, it's just the RLS that's got worse.
