Restless Legs Syndrome: The New Cure? Channel 5, 6th March

Many of you will have seen Channel 5's "Restless Legs Syndrome: Desperate for Help" in April 2017. Following its transmission, we fed your feedback to Channel 5 and the production company.

A new programme "Restless Legs Syndrome: The new Cure?" will be aired on Wednesday, 6th March at 9pm on Channel 5. As we are sure you will appreciate, we are uncomfortable with the title as there is NO cure for RLS. However, we have no control over the title which Channel 5 have assigned to the programme.

RLS-UK was invited to participate in the production of the programme but we declined, primarily because we were told we would have no influence on the content or tone of the programme. The title "The New Cure?' validates this decision as we would never have supported the inference that there may be a cure for RLS.

The last programme was watched by over 750,000 people and we saw a surge in enquiries and visits to our website, which meant a lot of people who had struggled with RLS finally found help. This was a significant positive of the last programme and we hope to see the same when this new programme is transmitted.

We look forward to sharing your feedback with Channel 5 and the production company.

Hmmm agree with you on the title didn't like the first program yeah it showed folk that has RLS but didn't explain about it nor what meds folks have to go through to help if any help at all be interesting to see what they say this time round if anything .

I'll try and contain my excitement, I am sure it will be as enlightening as ever other badly produced show.

As I classed the last programme as “extremely poor” and this is just an update on how those people have progressed since, I have little confidence in it being a valuable piece of work. However, if it succeeds In raising interest in our plight, I’ll welcome it with open arms. No such thing as bad publicity!

Why does Chanel 5 want to be sensational instead of being helpful to so many of us battling day to day?

Why do they not get their information verified by experts before airing a so far incurable medical condition? That was how I felt after their first attempt. I reserve judgement about the forthcoming programme but feel very sceptical.

My sentiments exactly

Have seen a trailer for the programme, will reserve judgement until seeing the programme, but wasn't particularly impressed by it.

It seemed to me that they may OVER-dramatise it. This might have a negative effect.

And, we know, there is no cure.

Will be interesting to see what the ‘cure’ is, having bypassed everybody on here!

I shall watch it in hope!

Me too

My hope was dashed. There was no indication of a cure. There was a slight suggestion that cannabis helps some people. I tried that - didn’t work for me.

Yes my hopes were too. I coudnt take cannabis because Im on other medication for blood pressure, epilepsy & B12 & dont want to take it & also I dont want to become an addict -as it would add to the depression of this horrible affliction

Is there a way to view this program in Norway?

Thanks,

I'm just watching this now. I do feel for them. I'm in the same situation but more painful

I now know why you disassociated yourself from this programme. Why on earth did they say,” A new cure?” albeit with a question mark? It led me to think there would be some suggestion of a cure.

As RLS gets worse as the day progresses I wonder if research into the chemicals that increase or decrease during the day would be a good place to start.

I have a feeling the circadian rythm has everything to do with what chemicals work on the brain. In the summer my rls is manageable with longer sunnier days but in winter it is hell. Doesn"t someone have a chemistry set?

Yes I agree, the title was misleading. I had several people messaging me to say I should watch it. Most disappointing. The only good thing was to raise awareness of the condition, to people who do not suffer. We all know what the condition looks and feels like already.
