Hi, I have been advised to apply for the PIP benefit as my RLS is very debilitating. Was just wondering if there have been any successful applications recently? Thank you, Mike.

I wish you success.

I receive DLA for my MS and will be called for a PIP assessment soon and know they will try to reduce it or cancel it because I can walk about 1000m.

I haven’t heard of anyone with RLS receiving it. You’ll need as much evidence as you can gather- video evidence, letters from GP, neurologists and physio.

I hope you get it as RLS is a much more serious disease than most doctors realise.

Hi Mike

My wife, who has Dystonia and quite bad arthritis, applied for, and was awarded, PIP. She had previously had DLA. She was encouraged to apply in the first place by a DSS benefits adviser. A point she stressed was that when you apply you must do so pointing out your worst day. In other words lay it on. I have severe RLS and haven’t applied but with one in the family and respectful of the National Exchequer I desisted. I wish you well and I am sure many will be interested in how you get on

I am interested because I suffer with severe a RLS and M.E. I also have low grade depression, so wondering if I would qualify for a blue badge! Any thoughts?

Personal independence payments(PIP) are paid to people who have additional care or mobility needs.

Sorry for my earlier message. I sent it to the wrong person. I think the key criteria for blue badge is how far you can walk. Google blue badge scheme.

Hello. What is PIP benefit? I’m in USA, Maryland and I am in the process of waiting approval for disability for RLS, neuropathy, depression and anxiety.

PIP stands for Personal Independence Payment and can be paid to someone who has additional care or mobility needs due to disability. There are some quite stringent criteria

Hi! I never knew that RLS could quality for PIP. But what I would advise is getting a letter from your GP, before you apply, with as much info as you can get. They will do all they can to decline you. So the more ammo you have, the better. Let me know how you get on.

Gather as much evidence as possible, stress everything as it is on your worst day, give as much information to support your application as possible. Take someone with you to your assessment and get them to write everything down that is said. You can then analyse the assessor’s words at your leisure and it keeps them on your toes. Finally remember, you are being assessed by people with minimal health qualifications. They are often physios or nurses, no disrespect intended but they are generalists and know very little of most people’s conditions. If you have support from consultants and they turn you down appeal. The appeal judges do not appreciate health experts being ignored by much lower qualified assessors. Successful appeals are running at 70%, I repeat - 70%.

Very good advice

Excellent advice and MUST be followed if you want success imho. If they say no keep pushing don't take it for an answer.

if your under a neuro dr by rights your suppose to be assessed by a dr hahaha we all know that doesn't happen unless your lucky enough.

Never say what you can do - only what you can't and stress these points as much as possible.

I get PIP for ME & RLS. If you consider that RLS brings; insomnia, anxiety, depression, poor life expectancy, accident prone, unable to cope, intense pain, etc, etc I'd be surprised if many were refused it but it will depend on your Dr's records and how you present at interview.

Best of luck.

One more piece of advice. Do not trust the assessors. They will pretend to be sympathetic and friendly, but they will try and trick you.

For PIP the DWP is not interested in the medical diagnosis or what illness you suffer from. PIP is a functional assessment based on a set of daily living and mobility activities for which you may score points, depending on the level of difficulty or impairment that you exhibit. The mistake people make is thinking that because they have a medical condition, they must be eligible. The list of daily living and mobility activities can be found here:

pipinfo.net/

So don't go on and on about the medical condition to the assessor or on the forms. Focus on its effect on what you can and can't do.

I represent claimants at assessments and Tribunals, what you say is absolutely correct.

I've been on DLA for years was for life due to being hearing impaired (only one question on hearing on pip form use to have a seperate form for deafness) i've been called up for PIP form got to be in by the 10th Dec :( thankfully got someone coming help me fill in the form from Wellbeing hopefully they're good at filling in the form i've never seen owt like it 40 page long same questions asked in different ways . Blumming tories saying it's to help folk making sure they get what their entitled to hmm... more like making life hard and adding stress to already stressed people , I lose DLA /PIP i lose my house and no doubt i'll lose my ESA even though they say it's not the same department never trust them , to many stories out there about PIP and ESA all scary stuff . Never go alone to an assessment try have home visit and recorded don't let the assessor beat you down , Good Luck to anyone that's going through it .
