Hello. My name is Jean. I have just returned to the U.K.from living in Cyprus for 23 years. I suffer from RLS but not continuously. My doctor prescribed Prexola 0.250mg and it works for a while but after a few weeks RLS comes back again. The tablets are pramipexol.

Check out "augmentation".

Either search through the drop down 'more' above.

You will find more on these sites.

Rlshelp.org

Basically the med you are on isnt working any more. The temptation is to increase the dose. This would be wrong. There are other meds to take- all in the above info links.

Come off the pramixepol slowly with your doctor's help.

Good luck.

You're welcome- sorry i was a bit brief- given the night that's in it here in Ireland! 😱

You could also check what other meds you're on that might be triggering the rls - cough meds, antihistamines etc- could account for the uneven attacks.

Also many foods affect different people - for me its rising agent ( shop biscuits ) msg, sulphites-most alcohol drinks and so on.

Is life worth living?????

Yes- my five grandchildren keep my will to live, alive.

And there are effective medications available- just to find the one that suits you individually.

Have a good trawl through this site and the rlshelp.org one-it has a huge list of Qs andAs-:just go through the last 20 or so pages for up to date info. Some of the earlier ones would be out of date.

Hope you get on ok and are coping with our winters here after your lovely climate out there.😆

Cheers.

For many people food is a trigger or cause of RLS. Did you have RLS in Cyprus? If not then perhaps you can see how your diet differed.

I would recommend you google FODMAP diet. The FODMAP diet was developed in Australia by the Monash University for IBS but I have found it to be effective foe my RLS and I know of others who have tried it with success. Look at posts on this forum and the UK site "patient" and you will find plenty of guidance If you have any questions feel free to get back to me on this topic.

Graham,

I'm fascinated by the idea diet will help. I've been on a strict paleo diet for 5 months but it's made no difference. Is your RLS severe ( in other words affecting you every night and keeping you awake for hours) or mild affecting you one or two nights a week? Before diet worked for you I mean, obviously. Were you ever on drugs for the RLS?

Sometimes the pramipexole needs another drug to help rather than increasing the dose. A lot of us also have a painkiller and they can work in combination. Otherwise I agree with Madlegs, check that any other medication is effecting the absorption of the drug. For me acid reflux meds had to be taken a few hours away form the Prami, etc. I have been taking it for years and only now is it losing its effectiveness, What dose are you on?

It's only 0.0250mg. It does the job a lot of the time. I have quite a few other medications, including Warfarin,so I have to be careful with other meds.

Jalioglu if your are taking melatonin or statins (cholesterol lowering drugs) those can make RLS bad. I found out the hard way. I am now a proponent of the iron bisglycinate. The problem is it doesn't work unless I take it right before bed and I can only take it with water. If I have food in my stomach or I take something like magnesium at the same time it doesn't work as well. If I take the iron in the morning it doesn't work at all.

hi jean .im jean too and have had rls all my miserable life cause thats how it makes you feel .and in my opinion medication is the only way but partly accepting it too .until someone comes up with the awnser .its there when you just settle or go to do something then you suddenly get a wee reminder just to say your not sitting and yes you got to get up and do someting till it goes . pramipexole is ok for me but not all the time .why i dont know . but life is helk at times and its good to hear how other pple cope so just do your best and stay calm. :(

I cope the best I can as I'm sure other sufferers do. I'm trying something else now,but I won't say what yet as I have just started. I'll post it in a few days, see how it goes.

Some of us have had success with iron (in the form of iron bisglycinate, which is easy to absorb and non-constipating.) Also calcium, such as calcium citrate capsules, also easy to absorb. (Tablets are not easy to absorb.)

Also, I feel strongly, as do some of the others on here, that keeping one's spine in shape helps to keep excess pressure off the nerves, which causes them to be hypersensitive. For this, a chiropractor is very helpful. They are trained in treating RLS, from a spinal point of view. Also, exercises that keep the spine flexible and loose make a big difference. I see my chiropractor once a month, not just for RLS, but for maintenance of the whole spine. I also have a sacroiliac problem as I have fallen on my tailbone several times in my life, and it goes 'out'. Then the RLS is very bad, no matter what I might take. When it is put back 'in', the RLS is so much less. (Sometimes it goes back in spontaneously.) My point is, since the nerves run thru the spine and out into the body, you can see if they are 'pinched' that they are then hypersensitive.

I also do exercises for flexibility, from Miranda Esmonde-White's books/cd's or programs on television. I love it! I am 65 yrs. old, fyi.
