Well, simple_luzvie24, one of the side effects of diabetes (both the early and late onset type, i.e. types 1 and 2) is neuropathy, damage to the peripheral nerves, especially nerve endings in the feet. Symptoms include tingling, numbness and other forms of discomfort or pain. I've had diabetes 2 for about 10 years, and some parts of my feet are numb. What does you doctor say?

Hi, simple_luzvie24,

Have you had your Vitamin B12 levels checked. Numbness and pins and needles can be a sign of low levels of this very important Vitamin.

If you go to PAS, (Pernicious Anemia Society) within Health Unlocked you can read up on some of the symptoms.

You GP can easily do your bloods for B12 and Folate to rule a deficiency out. It is very easy treated.

When you get them checked, ask for your figures with ranges , as mostly they may say it is normal (because it is in range) but it can still be very low in the range.

You can make a post on PAS for members to comment. Many people have low levels of B12 and GP's don't seem to check until they are asked.

It's probably NEUROPHATHY what you have. NEUROPHATHY is very common in people that have diabetes. It's caused by nerve damage and I don't know much more, but I also lost feeling in my last three toes of each foot and I am not diabetic, so I do t know why I got it. I hope someone here will enlighten us both on this problem. My husband IS diabetic and has very bad NEUROPHATHY on his feet.

Yes, I also have numbness in my toes/feet and my doctor says I am not diabetic, but does not tell me anything why it has happened. Also just now and then I get a tingling sensation under one of my feet. I would like to know more about this, but the doctor does not seem to care.

Hi Marguerite9,

Maybe you could check your Vitamine B12 levels. See reply above.

Hi Jose my GP told me that my B12 was o.k

Thankyou for your concern. I am reading the comments above and learning a bit more about numbness of feet.

Hi M,

I am a member of TUK ; i.e.Thyroid UK, PAS ; i.e. Pernicious Anemia Society ( that involves Vit B12) and RLS.

The things members advise on the other fora is to always ask for a print out of your results for a few different reasons.

1. They are yours, and you are entitled to them under the data protection act.

2. They are great as a reference when you need to check back.

I appreciate that a lot of members here may just get bloods checked annually, but on the other fora we need our blood done more often.

We always get print outs with the actual result and the ranges.

As I mentioned above ' normal' may be what you are told,. Normal basically means your result is in range.......it does not say where in the range you result lies.

To explain it a bit further M, if your result is 210 and the range is (191 - 900) your GP will say ' normal'

He/ She on most occasions will not say your B12 is low and you could benefit from taking a supplement and we will repeat it to see if you are able to absorb this most important Vitamin from your food.

I am not a medical professional, just a person who struggled to get a proper diagnoses for B12 deficiency.

All the best M,

J 🍀

I do so appreciate your kindness going to all the trouble to tell me about VitB and results, but at the time I did get a printout and I did put in on here and people all said my B12 was good. I would mention that I also take VitB 100 complex and that is all the vitamins in the B group. Also through good friends on this organisation, I found out I was VitD deficient and now my GP prescribes Vit D3 which I take regularly. I am also low on iron but the GP gave me some iron tablets and I had a terrible reaction to them. I have tried very low doses of iron like Solgar gentle iron 12 mg, but alas it really makes me constipated and upsets my stomach, so now I have stopped taking them. I am trying to increase iron through what I eat. I do not really like eating meat but I am putting it into a stew and then I can eat it. I am also eating liver, which I like, so maybe that will help with the iron.

Doctor not worried about it at all.

Again thankyou and God Bless for being so kind.

That's good M.

Can I say that when you supplement D3, it is advisable to take Vit K2 with it to ensure that the Calcium in the Vit D goes to your bones and not your tissues.

With Iron try to take Vit C with it too minimise constipation.

I had to learn the hard way M and through TUK they have helped so many members to better their health.

Take care my dear.

Thankyou so much Jose, I never knew about Vit K2 and I will get some. I knew about Vit C with iron, but I have had so much trouble when taking iron, that I am scared to take it again. Even as a child, the doctor used to give me an iron tonic and I was so ill. My face used to swell up and I got big scabs come all over it, so you can understand my reluctance to take it.

Anyway I will now buy the Vit K2 and start taking it with the Vit D3.

Again thankyou soooooooooooo much for all your help and kindness.

A Podiatrist would be helpful to explain numbness of the feet, if your doctor won't. A fully qualified, degree qualified podiatrist, registered with the HCPC - BSc after their name. They specialise in the foot.

Good luck

I have a condition called Mortons Neuroma which is an abnormal collection of nerves between the toes. It can be treated with cortisone injections or in some cases surgery. Cortisone injections have alleviated the symptoms slightly but not completely. I still have numbness and tingling in both feet

I have had this for years

You need to get advice from your GP as to the cause of your symptoms

Hope you get some answers

Or a Podiatrist - degree qualified who are foot specialists, as mentioned above. You can check you have a fully qualified one on the HCPC website.

Best wishes

Your GP would be the person to refer you to an NHS Podiatrist for assessment Marguerite9
