Magnessium is the answer - we just need more... e.g. higher doses than what is recommended for us restless legs peeps...

HI there I had chronic restless legs since i was 17 yrs and I am now 51.

So bad, that I couldn't sit still at dinner parties, movies, flights, and legs flying around vertical in the middle of the night. i HAVE tried everything over the years,, and recently i kept getting a whisper to try magnessium again, which i had before and had no luck.. but i tried again about a year ago, i brought the strongest NZ Healtheries brand at 400mg per tab of which you are told to take One per night.. i took four that night.. so desperate, OMG, it WORKS!!!! SERIOUSLY IT DOES.. Its a very high dose, but obviously my condition was so severe (e.g neurologists, medication etc which didnt work) - now, i can honestly say, its changed my life because i sleep so well.. and if i know i have a flight or long sitting event, i dose up. the next morning it does cause your system to work very well,, if you get my drift, but i see that as an added bonus as my system feel clear. My best friend who studies natural remedies tells me that 80% of the population in the western word esp. are deficient in magnessium and zinc.. i rest my case. all the best...and I really hope this helps you too...

I'm in NZ at present. I have a GO healthy magnesium 500mg elemental Natural marine mg. Oxide free. What do you reckon on this one ?

My problem is that I'm on oxycontin which completely stills the restless legs and so dont need mg. Except to help me sleep. How does that work for you?

Cheers.

Glad you have found the answer for you. But taking magnesium is not the answer for everyone. No one know why mag. seems to help some people.

in reply to

X your dose x four times the recommend dose, extreme it for extreme conditions

in reply to

Have you tried x four@ 400mgs per nite?

Hi. I am experimenting with Mag. Threonate at the moment. I am taking 500mg. I am concerned about overdose or rather system levels getting too high. Have you done any research about what levels are recommended for us with RLS because i can't find any?

Hi Jumpey, I am using the Dr. Mercola Magnesium L-Threonate which states on the box 2,000mg per serving (4 capsules per day). Based on that I do not think 500mg is even closed to the max daily amount. The box contains 120 capsules for a total serving of 30 days.

Thanks for that. Also what I'm concerned about is how much is safe to have stored in our bodies. Is it like iron-too much can be really dangrous.

you cannot OD on magnesium. It is nothing like iron overload, which can shut your kidneys down and be fatal. The only thing about MAG, you will find your own dose, and if you are constipated it may help you also. ;) When you find yourself in the looooooo too much, then you would need to back off the mag dose. I use it FOR constipation, and it will work for that! ;) Does not help my RLS at all.

Also vitamin D, of which a lot of us have to take as a supplement as vit D3, actually depletes magnesium. So you're right in that we need higher doses. I take a high dose of magnesium malate but think I need to raise it, possibly a lot more, am still experimenting. My RLS is severe and all over, and connected to my fibromyalgia. All med's I've tried are no good, in fact dopamine agonists give me rebound in the morning. Been on Ropinerole for 3 months and it's useless, but that's me, I know it helps others. There's a few more new med's that have just come out, and some in the pipeline. Magnesium is a good place to start though, and of course it takes time for the body to adjust it's levels. I've been reading Dr Carolyn Dean's book, the Magnesium Miracle.

Hi. Does she say what are good levels of mag to have stored in the body?

Glad it is working for you.

Glad you found a solution. At present I take 1350mg of Magnesium throughout the day, (1200mg as a Magnesium & Calcium supplement and 150 as part of a multi-vit) along with Gentle Iron and a host of prescription drugs and still get bad nights, I'll up the Mg dose the next time its bad, see if it works.

I will try this too. Started amino mag it was 20.00 for 30 tabs been taking for a week today. Still have rls every night. All night. Will keep taking I know it takes a while to kick in. But now I will also try this. Thank you. I am so freaking tired!!!!!!!

Have you had your iron tested?

I'm taking Iron too! I take 25mg of Gentle Iron at night, (on an empty Stomach) and 14mg in a multi-vitamin, (sometimes empty stomach sometimes after food), so I would imagine along with my diet I should be getting enough Iron.

Unfortunately not, but as said the dose is lower so may be worth upping it.

At the moment although not great my RLS is a lot better than it has been.

Thats 1600 per dose. Wow, thats a lot. Do you take this every night? I've tried magnesium before with no luck but never had the nerve to do this high a dose. Tell us more. What does it do to your elimination and all that personal stuff. Your body must be asking what you think you're doing to it. I really intend to try this so more info please. Soupy

in reply tosoupy33now

Yes, i take it every (1600mg) every night around 6pm, its been almost a year now... and yes, it does clean out my system as well in the morning, and i feel really great. I have sought advice on that, and have been told there is no harm. This does settle down after a few weeks.

I kept forgetting to post this up as remembered how desperate i had been esp after being on drugs that only made it worse and so sleep deprived walking around dead on my feet in the middle of the night.

Just wanted to share in case it helps even one person - it has changed my life.

Not interested in debate or discussion. Thanks :)

Yep, there is no harm, you cannot "OD" on magnesium, like you can with iron, for example.

Why you say "this is the answer" when you show up again, gives you away. magnesium and your "gentle" iron has not ever helped me, but different things for different people. It seems to be your answer, but not so for everyone. trial and error

in reply tonightdancer

Oh these posts keep popping up so I can't help but keep responding that's why I "keep showing up"

in reply to

Hi Jules, I am glad that you have posted here. When did you add iron to the mix? Previously it was just magnesium. And what type of iron are you taking and how are you liking it?

in reply to

And pleeeeeeezzzz do not let one strange rude person stop you from posting on here. The rest of us like hearing from you.

in reply to

You telling porkies again... no one is stopping any one from posting on here.

YOU are VERY lucky that your "gentle iron" stops RLS in it's tracks. That is not the norm, and I hate people to think that it is. I know it helps some, but it does not help all RLSer's like it does you. If it were only that simple!

Hi Jules, thank you for this. I am taking Magnesium 100mg (citrate) x 3 a day but am now wondering if I should up this level? It says on the bottle 3 a day and do not exceed, but I am wondering if I should up it or maybe check with my GP first? Although talking to a GP in the UK about 'alternative' meds is usually a waste of time as they say 'I can't comment/prescribe' that....! What do you think? I see one of your replies says you can't OD on Magnesium. Take care x
