I have suffered from RLS for several years but have recently found a technique which can make the symptoms disappear when an episode starts.
My RLS is in the 6 inches or so above the knees at the front of the thigh. It presents as a feeling of tightening of the muscles while I am sitting or lying down with the result that I have an overwhelming need to move my legs around. Getting up and walking around gets rid of it but it comes back immediately I sit down. This seems to be pretty normal. A few months ago, when I felt an episode coming on, I tried lying on my back with my knees in the air and my feet on the ground. I then gently stroked the affected area of the bare legs for a few seconds and found that the RLS symptoms went away. This seems to be the best scenario but it works even if I am wearing trousers or even if I just rest my hands gently on the area. Sometimes, just stroking for a few seconds works but sometimes a minute or two is necessary.
I haven't had a problem now for several months.
My doctor had prescribed Ropinirol which sort-of worked but brought on a different sort of restless legs / arms / whole body (limbs / body started to spasm alarmingly). Tried Ropinirol for 2 separate periods with the same result so I stopped using it.
I realise that RLS has many manifestations and this solution probably won't work for everyone but I would like to share it with other sufferers in the hope that it might help some.
