What on earth is a nightshade food? Could this relate to "Deadly Nightshade" from which the heart drug "Digitalis" is derived?

in reply toPete-1

Hi Pete, dont know much about this but I know potatoes and tomatoes are on the list! If you google it there is a full list of nightshade foods, I am sure someone will come along and explain why they think they are bedt avoided

Thank you p1pp1ns for your reply.Google came back with far too many words to read just now. May save that one for Ron.

Pete-1 click on the members at the top of the page, put mrspeanut in the search for a member. On a post Food Triggers, you will find out about the nightshade foods. :)

To save other people looking it up, this is what MrsPeanut said a month or so ago.

Try eliminating foods in the nightshade family ( tomatoes, potatoes, any type of red or green peppers, chili, jalapeno, etc, paprika ) apples, beets (they contain solanine which is a chemical also found in nightshades ) and alcohol!

Do no eat anything with any of them in it for at least 2 weeks. Do not eat foods that have been cooked in or contain any juices from any of these. Read labels and watch what are ingredients at restaurants!

Then introduce them back in and see what happens if your symptoms that day or evening are worse.

I did this and WOW. Now I avoid them like the plague!

Thanks Tiredparent, i didnt know if it was allowed to copy and paste someone's post to repost it again on here. Hence why i gave the info for finding it. :)

Hello Rays87, yes nightshade veg, beans including peanuts all give me rls. Foods with high content of grease as well. Breads with oats and whole grains as well. Why? My theory is that these foods produce gas...and the gas puts pressure on the nerves in our legs and other places. I am almost rls symptom free when avoiding these gas producing foods. If you experience an rls episode, just do some waist twists, walk a bit, drink water...go to the toilet and relieve the gas and any stool etc and the rls goes. This is my experience and the experience of others....can't speak for those people taking drugs ...best regards, gwenlou

Yes, I have found that nightshade veggies do affect my RLS. So, much that I have started a food diary. I intend to study more about them to understand. I am glad to see someone understands this.
